iPhone Speaker Replacement Near Netcare Linksfield Hospital, Linksfield West

Netcare Linksfield Hospital is about 5 km from our workshop at Shop 4, Silvercrest Shopping Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte, Johannesburg, 2192. That's roughly 10 to 15 minutes via 9th Avenue, George Avenue and Swemmer Road. Earpiece repairs start from R500 and loudspeaker repairs from R650, after a free diagnostic. Most speaker jobs take 30 to 45 minutes and carry a 6-month written warranty. We can also collect for a flat R300.

When You Can't Hear Your Phone in a Hospital Corridor

Netcare Linksfield Hospital sits on 12th Avenue in Linksfield West, in the same 2192 postal code as our workshop. It opened at the end of 1992 as Linksfield Park Clinic, and Netcare bought it in 1997. Today it runs an accredited Level 3 emergency department, cardiology, renal dialysis, robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery and a cochlear implant service, according to Netcare's own 30-year history of the hospital.

A hospital is where a weak iPhone speaker lets you down at the worst moment. Picture a family member pacing the corridor outside a ward, phone pressed to their ear, catching every second word from the doctor. Or a nurse at the end of a night shift who misses a call because the ringtone sounds thin in a busy emergency department. Speakerphone in a waiting room is not an option either, so the small earpiece at the top of the phone has to work.

We don't have a branch at the hospital. Our workshop is in Silvamonte, a short drive north, and every speaker repair is done there.

Earpiece or Loudspeaker? How to Tell Which One Failed

Your iPhone has two speakers, and they fail in different ways. The earpiece (top speaker) is the one you hear calls through when the phone is at your ear. The loudspeaker (bottom speaker) plays ringtones, alarms, speakerphone calls and videos. On iPhones with Face ID, they also work together for stereo sound.

A quick test: play some music and cover the bottom edge of the phone, then the top. If one end is much quieter, distorted or silent, that's the speaker at fault. If calls only fail when the phone is at your ear but speakerphone is fine, it's the earpiece.

What you notice Most likely cause What we do first From
Callers sound faint or muffled at your ear, speakerphone is fine Blocked earpiece grille or a worn earpiece Clean the grille, then test before replacing R500
Ringtone, alarms and videos are quiet or crackly Lint or residue in the bottom grille, or a damaged loudspeaker Clean the mesh, then check the membrane R650
Earpiece works only when you press the top of the screen Loose or worn earpiece flex cable Reseat or replace the flex R500
A rattle or buzz from the bottom of the phone Loose speaker mount, debris, or the Taptic Engine Listen and isolate the part before quoting R600
People can't hear you, but you can hear them A microphone, not a speaker Test each microphone separately Quote

Sanitiser, Wipes and Scrub Pockets

If you work in a hospital, your phone gets cleaned far more often than most. Apple says a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe is fine on the outside of an iPhone, but it also warns against getting moisture into any opening (see Apple's cleaning guide). Speaker grilles are openings. Over months, damp wipes and sanitiser gel on your hands leave a film in the fine mesh, and lint from coat and scrub pockets sticks to it. The result is a speaker that slowly gets quieter. It often isn't broken at all.

That's why we always clean the mesh and test again before we suggest a new part. If cleaning brings the volume back, you pay nothing for a replacement you don't need. To keep it that way, wipe the phone with the wipe wrung out, keep the grilles facing down, and let it dry before it goes back in your pocket.

If liquid actually got inside, for example a phone dropped into a basin, see our iPhone water damage repair page. Don't charge it, and bring it in the same day.

Check This Before You Book: Hearing Devices and Bluetooth

Netcare Linksfield offers cochlear implants, so some of the people walking its corridors rely on a hearing device. If that's you, or the person you're visiting, check this first. Many hearing aids and sound processors pair with an iPhone over Bluetooth. Once they're connected, calls and media can go to the hearing device instead of the speaker, so the phone seems silent. The same thing happens with earbuds left connected in a bag.

Swipe down to open Control Centre and check the audio output before you assume the speaker is dead. If sound still won't come out of the right place with nothing connected, or the phone keeps losing its Bluetooth connection, we'll check that too. See our Wi-Fi and Bluetooth repair page.

Two Phones, Two Different Speaker Jobs

An earpiece replacement isn't the same job on every iPhone. These two show why.

iPhone 12 (2020)

On the iPhone 12, the earpiece sits on the same flex as the Face ID TrueDepth system. If someone tears that flex while swapping the earpiece, Face ID stops working for good. We check Face ID before we start, do the work under the microscope, and test Face ID again afterwards, so this job takes 60 to 90 minutes instead of 30 to 45. Apple once ran a free service programme for iPhone 12 and 12 Pro earpieces with no sound, for phones made between October 2020 and April 2021. It only covered phones for a limited time after they were first sold, so most phones are now outside it. Ask Apple first if you're not sure. With us, an earpiece costs R1,000 aftermarket or R2,500 OEM, and a loudspeaker R850 aftermarket or R2,300 OEM.

iPhone 16 Pro (2024)

The iPhone 16 Pro earpiece also sits at the top of the display next to the TrueDepth camera in the Dynamic Island, so we use the same Face ID check before and after. Parts cost more on this model. An earpiece is R1,250 aftermarket or R2,800 OEM, and a loudspeaker R1,200 aftermarket or R2,600 OEM. The 16 Pro also has four microphones, so if people say your voice sounds muffled on calls, a blocked mic is just as likely as a speaker problem. We test all of them in the same free diagnostic.

Speaker Repair Prices

Every price includes parts, labour and a 6-month written warranty. You choose an aftermarket or OEM part, and your written quote says which one is fitted. Nothing is done until you approve it.

The other faults in the same part of the phone are checked in the same free diagnostic:

  • Microphone repair (assessment + quote): callers can't hear you, or voice notes sound distant.
  • Taptic Engine repair (from R600): no vibration, or a buzz that sounds like a loose speaker.
  • Button repair (from R600 for the flex): volume buttons that don't respond, so you can't turn the call up.
  • Rear enclosure (housing) repair (from R1,800): a bent frame after a drop, which can also loosen the speaker mounts.

From 12th Avenue to Swemmer Road

Leave the hospital on 12th Avenue and take 16th Street to 9th Avenue (M33). Carry on as it becomes Durham Street and then George Avenue (R25), and follow George Avenue to Swemmer Road (M40) in Silvamonte. It's about 5 km and usually 10 to 15 minutes. Allow longer at school times and in the afternoon rush.

  • Address: Shop 4, Silvercrest Shopping Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte, Johannesburg, 2192
  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 to 17:00
  • Saturday: 9:00 to 13:00
  • Sunday: closed

Walk-ins are welcome and you don't need an appointment. Most earpiece and loudspeaker repairs take 30 to 45 minutes, so you can wait, or drop the phone off between visiting hours and collect it later.

Stuck at a Bedside? We Can Collect

If you can't leave a family member, or you're between shifts, our Gauteng collection service picks your iPhone up and brings it back after the repair. It's a flat R300, separate from the repair price. We collect from homes and offices in Linksfield West, Sydenham, Linksfield and Sandringham. Hospitals have their own rules about deliveries, so choose a handover point you know works, such as your home or the main entrance, and tell us when you book. Back the phone up first if it still turns on.

Why People Near Linksfield Use Us

A speaker fault is a small repair, but the phone it's in holds your contacts, photos and the messages from the people you're worried about. A speaker swap doesn't wipe the phone, and we test both speakers and the microphones before it goes back to you.

The workshop has been running since 2003 and holds a 4.9-star Google rating. We're independent, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider, and we don't describe any part as genuine Apple. The quote names the exact part, and you pay nothing for the diagnostic if you decide not to go ahead.

Beyond speakers, our iPhone repairs cover screens, batteries, cameras and more, and you can find your model to see every price. For the wider area, see iPhone repair in Johannesburg, Bedfordview and Melrose Arch. Our local guides also cover iPhone batteries near Paterson Park in Norwood and iPhone batteries near Melrose Arch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is your workshop from Netcare Linksfield Hospital?

About 5 km, usually 10 to 15 minutes via 16th Street, 9th Avenue, George Avenue and Swemmer Road. We're at Shop 4, Silvercrest Shopping Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte, Johannesburg, 2192. We don't have a branch at the hospital, but we collect in Linksfield West and the surrounding suburbs for a flat R300.

I wipe my phone with alcohol wipes at work. Can that make the speaker muffled?

It can. Apple allows 70% alcohol wipes on the outside of an iPhone but warns against getting moisture into openings. Over time, damp wipes, sanitiser and pocket lint build up in the speaker mesh and the sound gets quieter. We clean the grilles and retest first, and often that's all it needs.

I'm visiting someone at the hospital. Can my speaker be fixed the same day?

Usually, yes. Most earpiece and loudspeaker repairs take 30 to 45 minutes at our Silvamonte workshop, about 10 to 15 minutes' drive from the hospital. An iPhone 12 earpiece takes 60 to 90 minutes because we work under the microscope to protect Face ID. WhatsApp us your model first so we can check stock.

How much does an iPhone speaker repair cost?

From R500 for an iPhone 8 earpiece and R650 for an iPhone 8 loudspeaker, both with aftermarket parts. An iPhone 12 earpiece is R1,000 aftermarket or R2,500 OEM. An iPhone 16 Pro earpiece is R1,250 aftermarket or R2,800 OEM, and its loudspeaker R1,200 or R2,600. Every price includes labour and a 6-month written warranty.
