iPad Camera Replacement Near Blubird Shopping Centre, Birnam

An Open-Air Centre, and Why That Matters for Your iPad
Blubird Shopping Centre (you'll also see it written "Bluebird") sits on the corner of Fort Road and Atholl-Oaklands Road in Birnam, a few hundred metres north of Melrose Arch. It opened in 2007 and was designed to be completely outdoors, with open walkways and a small park, instead of a roofed mall. Tenants include Woolworths Food and Dis-Chem, and the parking is off Atholl-Oaklands Road.
That open layout is part of the appeal, and it's also where a lot of iPads take their knocks. An iPad propped on a café table outside or carried in a shopping bag across paving is one slip away from landing face-down or on its back. On most models the rear camera sits in a small raised bump. It's the first thing to hit the ground, so a cracked lens cover or a camera that won't focus often comes from a drop, even when the screen survived.
The other kind of camera problem around here comes from work. Melrose Arch is mostly offices, and plenty of people in Birnam and Melrose North work from home. On a video call, a dead front camera is noticed straight away. A rear camera that won't focus is a problem too if you scan documents or signatures with the iPad.
What Goes Wrong With iPad Cameras
These are the faults we see most. Each one points to a different repair, which is why we test the iPad before quoting.
- Black screen in the Camera app: a failed camera module, a damaged flex cable or a software fault. One camera working and the other not is a useful clue.
- Blurry photos or no autofocus: a damaged lens assembly or a failing module. If cleaning the lens doesn't help, the module usually needs replacing.
- Green lines or colour artefacts: a damaged sensor or cable, usually fixed by replacing the camera module.
- Camera app crashes on opening: we try a software reset first, then test the hardware.
- Front camera faults on iPad Pro: the front camera sits beside the TrueDepth system used for Face ID, so we work carefully to keep Face ID working.
- LiDAR warnings on iPad Pro (2020 and later): a cracked or misaligned LiDAR window can trigger AR warnings even when the visible lenses look fine. The scanner can be replaced.
Before you book, try the quick checks in Apple's camera troubleshooting guide: take off the case, clean both lenses with a microfibre cloth, restart and update iPadOS, and check the app's camera permission. If the camera still fails, it's a hardware fault, and our iPad camera repair page has the details for every model.
A camera fault is sometimes part of a bigger problem. If the front glass is cracked over the selfie camera, a screen repair may be the real fix. If the iPad got wet, see iPad liquid damage repair. If the camera works in one app but not another, it may be an iPadOS software fault, not hardware.
Which Camera Problem Is It?

Two iPads, Two Very Different Camera Jobs
To see why one price can't cover every iPad, compare a ten-year-old model with a current one.
iPad Air 2 (2014)
Plenty of iPad Air 2 tablets (model A1566 or A1567) are still around as family or kids' iPads. The Air 2 has an 8MP rear camera with no flash and a basic 1.2MP FaceTime HD camera on the front. Both are simple modules, so its camera repair is one of the more straightforward iPad jobs. Because this iPad is over ten years old, we check the rest of it at the same free diagnostic. The battery (R850 on this model) and the soldered Lightning port are its other common faults, so you can decide whether the repair is worth it before you spend anything.
iPad Pro 11-inch (M4, 2024)
The iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) is at the other end. On the back are a 12MP camera, the LiDAR scanner and a flash. Apple moved the 12MP front camera to the long edge, so you're centred on a video call when the iPad sits in landscape on a keyboard. If that camera fails, you'll notice it on your next work call. That front camera sits with the Face ID sensors, and at 5.3 mm this is the thinnest iPad Apple has made, so there's very little room to work inside. Camera work on the M4 is slow and careful, and it's quoted after the free diagnostic like every other model.
Getting There From Blubird
From the centre, head down to Corlett Drive and drive east to Louis Botha Avenue. Follow Louis Botha north, then take Athol Street and Northfield Avenue into Silvamonte. It's about 6 km and usually 12 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic on Corlett Drive and Louis Botha. On the way you'll pass close to Paterson Park in Norwood.
- Address: Shop 4, Silvercrest Shopping Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte, Johannesburg, 2192
- Monday to Friday: 9:00 to 17:00
- Saturday: 9:00 to 13:00
- Sunday: closed
Walk-ins are welcome and no appointment is needed. We don't have a branch in Birnam or at Blubird; our workshop is in Silvamonte.
Collection From Birnam or a Melrose Arch Office
If you can't get away from your desk, our collection service picks the iPad up from your home in Birnam or Melrose North, or from an office at Melrose Arch. Once it's repaired, we bring it back. It's a flat R300, insured, and separate from the repair price. If your building has a reception desk or visitor process, tell us when you book so the driver knows where to go. Back up the iPad first if it still turns on. If it won't, see our iPad data recovery page.
How the Price Is Worked Out
We don't advertise one camera price for every iPad, because the work is very different from model to model. A standard iPad or iPad Air has a single rear lens and a fairly simple module swap. An iPad Pro adds the LiDAR scanner to the rear camera system, and its front camera sits next to Face ID. So every camera job is quoted after a free diagnostic:
- We test the front camera, rear camera, flash and (on Pro models) LiDAR, and check whether the fault is in the module, the cable or the board.
- You get a written, itemised quote. Nothing is repaired until you approve it.
- Most camera repairs are done the same day or within 1 to 3 business days. Board-level faults take longer, and we'll tell you up front.
- Every camera repair carries a 6-month written warranty.
If the diagnostic finds a deeper fault, such as a damaged connector on the board, our iPad logic board repair work is done in the same workshop. To see what we charge for other iPad repairs, look up your model.
Why iPad Owners Around Melrose Bring Them to Us
We've been repairing Apple devices since 2003, and our customers rate us 4.9 stars on Google. iAssist is an independent workshop, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider, so we never describe our parts as genuine Apple. Your quote tells you exactly which part is going in. The diagnostic is free whether or not you go ahead.
Cameras are only one of the things we fix on iPads. See the full list of iPad repairs. Nearby, we have pages for Apple repair at Melrose Arch, Rosebank, Sandton and Hyde Park. Our local posts also cover Apple Watch batteries near James & Ethel Gray Park, just across Melrose, and iPhone batteries near Paterson Park, which is on your route in.
Call 078 742 4769 or WhatsApp us with your iPad's model (Settings > General > About) to book a free diagnostic.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is your workshop from Blubird Shopping Centre?
About 6 km, usually 12 to 20 minutes via Corlett Drive, Louis Botha Avenue, Athol Street and Northfield Avenue. We're at Shop 4, Silvercrest Shopping Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte, Johannesburg, 2192. We don't have a branch at Blubird, but we collect from Birnam for a flat R300.
Is Blubird in Birnam or Melrose North?
Blubird (sometimes spelled Bluebird) is on the corner of Fort Road and Atholl-Oaklands Road in Birnam, just north of Melrose Arch, which is in Melrose North. The two suburbs sit side by side, and we serve both the same way: walk in at our Silvamonte workshop or book R300 collection.
Can you collect my iPad from an office at Melrose Arch?
Yes. We collect from offices at Melrose Arch and from homes in Birnam and Melrose North for a flat R300, separate from the repair price. Tell us about the reception or visitor process when you book. We send a written quote after the free diagnostic, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.
How much does an iPad camera replacement cost?
It depends on the model and which camera has failed. A rear camera on an iPad Air 2 is a much simpler job than the camera and LiDAR system on an iPad Pro 11-inch (M4), so every camera repair is quoted in writing after a free diagnostic. You only pay if you approve the quote, and every camera repair has a 6-month written warranty.
