Xbox One Repair Johannesburg
Xbox One Repair Johannesburg — One, One S & One X
Most Xbox Ones still in use are well past their seventh birthday, and they tell you they need help in familiar ways: a dashboard that takes minutes to load, a "Something went wrong" screen after an update, a black TV, a fan that never quietens down, or a console that stopped working after load shedding. The good news is that the usual culprit — a worn-out hard drive — is one of the most affordable console repairs there is, and it can be swapped for a faster SSD while it's open. Free diagnostic, written quote, 6-month warranty.

Xbox One, One S and One X — what goes wrong on each
Xbox One X (Model 1787)
Launched 2017 · 1TB hard drive · 4K Blu-ray slot-loading drive · built-in power supply
The One X packed near-4K performance into a small, dense case, so heat is its weak point. After a few years the cooling is packed with dust and the thermal paste has dried out, and the console gets loud, then starts shutting down in demanding games. It still boots from a mechanical hard drive, which is why a One X can feel slower than it should — and why an SSD upgrade makes such a difference to it.
Most common faults:
- Loud fan and shutdowns under load
- Hard drive failure — E-codes, slow dashboard
- HDMI port damage
- Disc drive won't take or read discs
Xbox One S & One S All-Digital (Model 1681)
Launched 2016 · 500GB, 1TB or 2TB · built-in power supply · All-Digital Edition (2019) has no disc drive
The One S is the Xbox One we see most. It moved the power supply inside the console, so when a One S won't start after a storm or load shedding, the internal supply or the board is the suspect — there's no brick to test. Its hard drive is the other big one: many are now worn out, which shows up as painfully slow loading and failed updates. The All-Digital Edition is the same console with no disc drive.
Most common faults:
- Hard drive failure — 'Something went wrong', update loops
- Dead after a surge — internal power supply
- HDMI port damage
- Disc version: drive won't take or eject discs
Xbox One original (Model 1540)
Launched 2013 · 500GB or 1TB hard drive · external power brick · HDMI in and HDMI out
The original Xbox One has two HDMI ports on the back — one out to the TV and one in for a TV decoder — and a cable in the wrong one is a surprisingly common 'no picture' fault. It runs from an external power brick, which makes power faults easier to narrow down. Its 500GB hard drive is now the main reason these consoles crawl, freeze on updates or show E-codes.
Most common faults:
- Hard drive failure and update errors
- Won't turn on — power brick or console board
- No picture — HDMI port or cable in the 'HDMI in' port
- Slot-loading drive not taking discs
Xbox One faults we fix — and what each one usually means
Slow dashboard, "Something went wrong" and E-codes
Every Xbox One boots from a 2.5-inch mechanical hard drive, and after years of use it wears out. The signs are a dashboard that takes minutes to load, games freezing while they load, updates that fail, and error codes like E100, E101, E102 or E106. Microsoft's Offline System Update from a USB stick is worth trying first.
If the errors keep coming back, the drive needs replacing. We fit a new drive and reinstall the Xbox system software so the console starts like new. While it's open, an SSD makes start-up and loading noticeably faster. Hard drive replacement from R1,800 · SSD upgrade: free quote.

No picture on the TV
On an original Xbox One, check first that the cable is in the HDMI out port, not HDMI in. Then try another cable and TV input, and reset the display: with no disc in the drive, switch the console off by holding the Xbox button for 10 seconds, then hold the Xbox and Eject buttons (One S All-Digital: Xbox and Pair) until the second beep.
If the screen is still black, the HDMI port is usually damaged — bent or pushed-in pins from a cable pulled sideways. HDMI port from R1,200.

Won't turn on, or switches straight off
On the original Xbox One, look at the light on the power brick. A solid white or orange light means the brick is working; no light, or a flashing one, points to the brick itself. The One S and One X have their power supply inside, so a surge after load shedding usually takes out that internal supply first.

Loud fan, overheating, shutting down mid-game
An Xbox One that roars from the moment it starts, or switches off mid-game, is almost always clogged with dust and running on dried-out thermal paste. The One X is the most sensitive because so much power is packed into a small case. Keep it out of closed cabinets and off the carpet.
A full service — strip-down, fan and heatsink clean, new thermal paste and a soak test under load — usually brings it back to near-silent. Full service from R1,000.

Every disc Xbox One uses a slot-loading drive. A disc that won't go in, won't come out or gets rejected is usually the loading mechanism; discs that go in but won't play point to the laser. Clean the disc and try another one first. The One S All-Digital has no drive at all.
Disc drive repair from R1,000.

- Your saves are probably safe. Xbox saves sync to the cloud when the console is online, and digital games are linked to your Microsoft account.
- Note any error code (E100, E102 and so on) or take a photo of the screen.
- Remove any disc, and bring the power cable — and the power brick if you have an original Xbox One.
- After a surge, stop trying to switch it on. Repeated attempts can turn a power-supply repair into a board repair.
- You don't need to give us your Microsoft account password. We test on our own account.
A photo of the sticker on the back (Model 1787, 1681 or 1540) plus a line about what happens is usually enough for a starting price on WhatsApp.
How an Xbox One repair works at iAssist
1. Free diagnostic
We test the hard drive's health, HDMI output, the power supply or brick, temperatures under load and the disc drive, and find the actual failed part — not just the symptom.
2. Written quote
You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.
3. Component-level repair
We replace the failed port, chip or module under a microscope rather than swapping the whole motherboard — which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.
4. Soak test & hand-over
Every repaired console runs a game under load before it goes back to you, then leaves with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

Common questionsXbox One repair — frequently asked questions
How much does Xbox One repair cost?
It depends on the fault. Starting prices: hard drive replacement with system reinstall from R1,800, HDMI port from R1,200, internal power supply from R1,200, full service from R1,000, disc drive repair from R1,000 and board-level power repair from R1,500. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts.
Why is my Xbox One so slow?
Almost always because its mechanical hard drive is wearing out. Most Xbox Ones are now seven years old or more, and a tired drive makes the dashboard and games load very slowly before it fails completely. Replacing it, or upgrading to an SSD, makes the console feel new again.
Can you put an SSD in my Xbox One?
Yes. We replace the internal hard drive with an SSD and reinstall the Xbox system software. Start-up and loading times drop noticeably. Ask for a quote with the size you want.
My Xbox One says "Something went wrong". Can you fix it?
Usually, yes. Codes like E100, E101, E102 and E106 mean the console couldn't finish starting or updating. Try Microsoft's Offline System Update first. If it keeps happening, the hard drive is very often failing; replacement with a system reinstall starts from R1,800.
My Xbox One turns on but there's no picture. What should I check?
On an original Xbox One, make sure the cable is in the HDMI out port, not HDMI in. Then try another cable and TV input and a display reset. If the screen is still black, the HDMI port is usually damaged; repairs start from R1,200.
My Xbox One won't turn on. Is it the power brick?
On the original Xbox One, check the brick's light: solid white or orange means it's working, no light or flashing points to the brick. The One S and One X have an internal power supply instead, and replacements start from R1,200.
Will I lose my games and saves?
HDMI, power, fan and disc drive repairs don't touch your storage. If the hard drive is replaced, saves that synced to the cloud come back when you sign in, and digital games can be downloaded again from your Microsoft account.
Is it worth repairing an Xbox One?
Usually, yes. Most Xbox One repairs cost between R1,000 and R1,800, far less than a replacement console. If a repair isn't worth doing, we'll tell you before you spend anything.
How long does an Xbox One repair take?
Most repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test under gaming load. Board-level faults can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.
Can you collect my Xbox One?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
