Xbox One HDMI Port Repair Johannesburg
Xbox One HDMI Port Repair Johannesburg
The console hums, the controller lights up, and the TV says "no signal". On an Xbox One, One S or One X that's usually the HDMI port: a cable yanked sideways, a console moved with the cable still in, or a port that has worn loose after years of plugging and unplugging. Sometimes it's something simpler: every Xbox One has an HDMI in port next to HDMI out, and the cable is in the wrong one. We rule out the easy causes with you first, then check the port and the HDMI chip behind it under the microscope and replace only what's failed.

Xbox One HDMI repair by model
Xbox One X (Model 1787)
HDMI out (4K HDR) and HDMI in on the back · port soldered to the motherboard
The One X sends a 4K HDR signal, so a port with a slightly cracked joint often shows up as flicker or sparkles at 4K before it fails completely — dropping the resolution makes the problem seem to go away. The console is compact and heavy, and most port damage comes from it being pulled or moved with the cable attached. Replacing the port means taking it down to the bare board, so we also clean the cooling while it's open, which matters on the hot-running One X.
Most common faults:
- Flicker or sparkles at 4K, fine at 1080p
- No signal after the console was moved
- Bent or pushed-in pins
- No picture after a surge (HDMI chip)
Xbox One S & One S All-Digital (Model 1681)
HDMI out and HDMI in on the back · port soldered to the motherboard
The One S is the Xbox One we see most, and it's small enough to carry between rooms — usually with the HDMI cable still in. That's how most One S ports get damaged. Like every Xbox One, it has both an HDMI in and an HDMI out port next to each other, so check which one the cable is in before assuming the worst. The All-Digital Edition is the same console without a disc drive, and the HDMI repair is identical.
Most common faults:
- Port damaged by moving the console with the cable in
- Loose plug that only works at an angle
- Cable in the HDMI in port by mistake
- No picture after a surge (HDMI chip)
Xbox One original (Model 1540)
HDMI out and HDMI in side by side · external power brick
The original Xbox One has two HDMI ports next to each other on the back: HDMI out goes to the TV, and HDMI in was for a decoder box. A cable in the wrong one gives you a black screen with a perfectly healthy console. If it's in the right port and there's still nothing, the out port has usually been damaged by years of use or a cable pulled sideways. It's the oldest Xbox One, so we check the power brick and hard drive while it's in too.
Most common faults:
- Cable plugged into HDMI in instead of HDMI out
- Worn or loose HDMI out port
- Bent pins from a cable pulled sideways
- No picture after a surge
Xbox One HDMI faults — and what each one usually means
No signal, but the console is on
Try another HDMI cable and another TV input first, then reset the display output: with no disc in, hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds to switch it off, then hold the Xbox button and the Eject button together (One S All-Digital: the Xbox button and the Pair button) until the second beep. It starts in low resolution — if you now get a picture, it was a setting, not a fault.
If the screen is still black, look into the HDMI port with a torch. Bent or pushed-in pins mean the port needs replacing. If the port looks perfect, the HDMI chip behind it is the next suspect. We test both before quoting. HDMI port from R1,200 · HDMI chip quoted after a free diagnostic.

Every Xbox One — original, One S and One X — has two HDMI ports side by side on the back. HDMI out goes to your TV; HDMI in is for a decoder or set-top box. A cable in the wrong one gives you a black screen and a console that seems dead. Check the small labels above the ports before booking a repair — it's the most common "fault" we fix without opening anything.

Short black-outs, sparkles or sound dropping out — often worst at 4K on the One X — usually mean a cracked solder joint or a worn pin that only just makes contact. Try a good high-speed HDMI cable first, because a damaged cable does the same thing. If that doesn't help, the port needs replacing before it fails completely. HDMI port from R1,200.

A plug that wobbles, falls out or only works at an angle means the port's shell or solder joints have come loose from the board. Shine a torch into the port: a bent or pushed-back centre tongue, or dark marks around the pins, means it has to be replaced. Don't keep forcing the plug in — it can short neighbouring pins and damage the HDMI chip too. HDMI port from R1,200.

Behind the port is a small HDMI chip that handles the video signal on its way out. It's sensitive to surges from load shedding, lightning and faulty TV or soundbar connections, and it can fail while the port looks brand new. Replacing it is micro-soldering work done under the microscope. We quote it in writing after a free diagnostic, and test the console on our own TV before it goes back.

We regularly see consoles where a previous HDMI repair has failed: lifted pads, missing tiny parts next to the port, or a low-quality port. Many can still be rescued by rebuilding the damaged pads and fitting a proper port, but it takes longer than a normal repair. Bring it in for a free diagnostic and we'll tell you honestly whether it can be saved and what it will cost.

- Check the port first. On every Xbox One, the cable must be in HDMI out, not HDMI in.
- Try the display reset and another cable. Xbox + Eject (All-Digital: Xbox + Pair) from off, until the second beep.
- Stop pushing the plug in. Forcing a loose cable can damage the HDMI chip as well as the port.
- Bring the HDMI cable you use so we can test it too. For an original Xbox One, bring the power brick as well.
- Your games and saves are safe. An HDMI repair doesn't touch the hard drive, and Xbox saves sync to the cloud.
A photo into the HDMI port with a torch, plus the Model number from the sticker, is usually enough for us to tell you on WhatsApp whether it's the port.
How an Xbox One HDMI repair works at iAssist
1. Free diagnostic
We test the HDMI output on our own TV and cable, inspect the port and the HDMI chip under the microscope, and check for other faults while the console is open.
2. Written quote
You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.
3. Component-level repair
We replace the failed port, chip or module under a microscope rather than swapping the whole motherboard — which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.
4. Tested on our TV before hand-over
Every repaired Xbox One is run with a game on our test TV, at 4K on a One X, and the plug is wiggled to check the new port holds, before it goes back to you with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

Common questionsXbox One HDMI port repair — frequently asked questions
How much does an Xbox One HDMI port repair cost?
HDMI port replacement starts from R1,200 on the Xbox One, One S and One X. If the HDMI chip behind the port has failed, that's quoted after a free diagnostic. You get the exact price in writing before any work starts.
My Xbox One turns on but there's no picture. Is it the HDMI port?
Often, yes — but check the easy things first. Make sure the cable is in HDMI out, not HDMI in, try another cable and TV input, and do the display reset (Xbox + Eject from off until the second beep). If there's still nothing, the port or the HDMI chip is the most likely cause.
What's the difference between HDMI in and HDMI out on an Xbox One?
HDMI out sends the picture to your TV. HDMI in was designed for a decoder or set-top box, so you could watch TV through the Xbox. If your TV is connected to HDMI in, you'll get no picture from the console.
How do I know if it's the port or the HDMI chip?
A port fault usually follows physical damage: the console was moved with the cable in, the plug feels loose, or the pins look bent. A chip fault usually follows a power surge, and the port looks perfect. We check both under the microscope before quoting.
My Xbox One X flickers at 4K but works at 1080p. Why?
4K HDR needs a much cleaner signal, so a slightly cracked joint in the port or a worn cable shows up at 4K first. Try a new high-speed HDMI cable. If that doesn't fix it, the port is starting to fail and should be replaced before it goes completely.
Will I lose my games and saves?
No. An HDMI repair doesn't touch the hard drive, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are. Xbox saves also sync to the cloud when the console is online.
How long does an Xbox One HDMI repair take?
Most repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a test on our TV with a game running. HDMI chip repairs and rescues of previous repairs can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.
Is it worth repairing an old Xbox One?
Usually, yes. An HDMI port repair costs a fraction of a replacement console, and you keep your games and settings. If the console has other problems that make the repair not worth it, we'll tell you before you spend anything.
Is there a warranty on Xbox One HDMI repairs?
Yes. Every Xbox One HDMI repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.
Can you collect my Xbox One?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
