Xbox Series X & S HDMI Port Repair Johannesburg

Xbox Series X & S HDMI Port Repair Johannesburg

The Xbox logo lights up, the fan spins, the controller connects — and the TV says "no signal". On a Series X or Series S that's almost always the HDMI port: a cable pulled sideways, a console knocked over or carried with the cable in, or a port worn loose. When the port looks perfect, the culprit is usually the small HDMI retimer chip behind it, which can fail after a power surge. We check both under the microscope, replace only the part that's failed, and test the console at 4K before it goes back to you.

Xbox Series HDMI repair by model

Xbox Series X (Model 1882)

HDMI 2.1 port soldered to the motherboard · disc and Digital Edition

The Series X usually stands upright, and that's where most of its HDMI damage comes from: the tall console gets knocked or tipped over with the cable still in, and the plug levers the port on the board. The port is soldered straight onto the motherboard, so replacing it means taking the console down to the bare board. Its HDMI 2.1 signal also passes through a small retimer chip before it reaches the port, so we test that too while it's open — and clean the fan and heatsink at the same time.

Most common faults:

  • No signal after the console was knocked or tipped over
  • Picture cuts out when the cable is touched
  • Bent or pushed-in pins
  • No picture after a power surge (retimer chip)

Xbox Series S (Model 1883)

HDMI 2.1 port soldered to the motherboard · small, light, digital only

The Series S is light enough to carry from the lounge to a bedroom, which is exactly how most Series S HDMI ports get damaged: the console is picked up with the cable still in and the plug twists the port off its solder joints. HDMI port damage is the single most common Series S repair we do. The repair is the same as on the Series X — the old port comes off, the pads are cleaned and the new port is soldered on and inspected under the microscope.

Most common faults:

  • Port damaged by carrying the console with the cable in
  • Loose plug that only works at an angle
  • No signal after a surge (retimer chip)

Xbox Series HDMI faults — and what each one usually means

No signal, but the Xbox logo is lit

Rule out the simple things first: try another HDMI cable (ideally the one from the box), another HDMI input on the TV, and another TV if you have one. Then reset the display output: with no disc in, hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds to switch it off, then hold the Xbox button and the Eject button together (Series S and Digital Edition: the Xbox button and the Pair button) until the second beep. It starts in low resolution — if you now get a picture, it was a setting, not a fault.

If the screen is still black, the HDMI port or the retimer chip has failed. We inspect both under the microscope before quoting, so you only pay for the part that's actually broken. HDMI port from R1,500 · retimer chip from R1,800.

Picture flickers, goes black for a second, or the sound cuts out

Short black-outs, sparkles or sound dropping out — often worst at 4K/120Hz — usually mean a cracked solder joint or a worn pin that only just makes contact. It tends to get worse when the cable is touched or the console warms up. Try a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable first, because a damaged cable does the same thing. If that doesn't help, the port needs replacing before it fails completely. HDMI port from R1,500.

The HDMI cable feels loose or only works at an angle

A plug that wobbles, falls out or only works in one position means the port's metal shell or its solder joints have come loose from the board. Don't keep forcing it — pressing on a loose port can short neighbouring pins and damage the retimer chip as well, turning a port repair into a bigger one. HDMI port from R1,500.

Bent, broken or burnt HDMI port

Shine a torch into the port. If the centre tongue is bent, cracked or pushed back, or there are dark marks around the pins, the port is physically damaged and has to be replaced. Burn marks can also mean the retimer chip took a hit, so we always test it after fitting the new port. HDMI port from R1,500 · retimer chip from R1,800 if it's also damaged.

No picture after a power surge, but the port looks perfect

Between the Xbox's processor and the HDMI port sits a small retimer chip that cleans up the high-speed 4K signal before it reaches your TV. It's sensitive to surges from load shedding, lightning and faulty TV or soundbar connections, and it can fail while the port looks brand new. Replacing it is micro-soldering work done under the microscope, and we test the console at 4K before it goes back. Retimer chip from R1,800.

Not working after an HDMI repair somewhere else

We regularly see consoles where a previous HDMI repair has failed: lifted pads, missing tiny parts next to the port, or a low-quality port. Many can still be rescued by rebuilding the damaged pads and fitting a proper port, but it takes longer than a normal repair. Bring it in for a free diagnostic and we'll tell you honestly whether it can be saved and what it will cost.

Before you bring your Xbox in

  1. Try the display reset and another cable first. Xbox + Eject (Series S: Xbox + Pair) from off, until the second beep. If you get a picture, it isn't the port.
  2. Stop pushing the plug in. Forcing a loose cable can damage the retimer chip as well as the port.
  3. Bring the HDMI cable you use so we can test it too.
  4. Your games and saves are safe. An HDMI repair doesn't touch the storage, and Xbox saves sync to the cloud.
  5. Tell us if it happened after a power surge — that points us towards the retimer chip.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A photo into the HDMI port with a torch, plus the Model number from the sticker, is usually enough for us to tell you on WhatsApp whether it's the port.

How an Xbox HDMI repair works at iAssist

1. Free diagnostic

We test the HDMI output on our own TV and cable, inspect the port and the retimer chip under the microscope, and check for other faults while the console is open.

2. Written quote

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

3. Component-level repair

4. Tested at 4K before hand-over

Every repaired Xbox is run with a game at 4K on our test TV, and the plug is wiggled to check the new port holds, before it goes back to you with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

Xbox Series X|S HDMI port repair — frequently asked questions

How much does an Xbox Series X or Series S HDMI port repair cost?

HDMI port replacement starts from R1,500 on both the Series X and Series S. If the HDMI retimer chip has also failed, chip replacement starts from R1,800. You get the exact price in writing after a free diagnostic, before any work starts.

How do I know if it's the HDMI port or the retimer chip?

A port fault usually follows physical damage: the console was knocked over or carried with the cable in, the plug feels loose, or the pins look bent. A retimer fault usually follows a power surge, and the port looks perfect. We check both under the microscope before quoting, so you only pay for the part that's failed.

My Xbox turns on but there's no picture. Is it the HDMI port?

Very often, yes. First try another HDMI cable, another TV input and the display reset (Xbox + Eject from off; Series S: Xbox + Pair). If there's still no picture, the HDMI port or the retimer chip is the most likely cause.

What is the HDMI retimer chip?

It's a small chip between the Xbox's processor and its HDMI port that cleans up the high-speed 4K signal before it reaches your TV. When it fails, the console powers on normally and the port can look perfect, but the TV gets no signal.

Can a damaged HDMI cable cause this?

Yes. A cable with a bent plug or broken wires can cause flicker or no signal, and a bent plug can damage the port. Always try another cable first, and bring yours in so we can check it.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. An HDMI repair doesn't touch the storage, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are. Xbox saves also sync to the cloud when the console is online.

How long does an Xbox HDMI repair take?

Most repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a test at 4K with a game running. Retimer chip repairs and rescues of previous repairs can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

How do I stop it happening again?

Never move or carry the console with the HDMI cable plugged in, stand the Series X where it can't be knocked over, leave some slack in the cable, and plug the console into a surge protector to protect the retimer chip.

Is there a warranty on Xbox HDMI repairs?

Yes. Every Xbox HDMI repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.

Can you collect my Xbox?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
