Xbox Series X & S Repair Johannesburg

Xbox Series X & Series S Repair Johannesburg

The Series X and Series S are tough consoles, but they fail in very predictable ways: a black TV screen while the Xbox logo glows happily, a fan that won't settle down, a console that stopped responding after the power came back, or a "Something went wrong" screen with an E-code. Most of these come down to one part — the HDMI port, the small HDMI retimer chip behind it, the internal power supply or the cooling — and we replace that part instead of the whole board. Free diagnostic, written quote, 6-month warranty.

Xbox Series X and Series S — what goes wrong on each

Xbox Series X (Model 1882)

Launched 2020 · 4K Blu-ray disc version and all-digital white edition · built-in power supply

The Series X pulls cool air in through the bottom and pushes it out through one large fan in the top, which works brilliantly until dust, pet hair or something spilled from above gets into that fan. Its HDMI 2.1 output runs through a small retimer chip on the way to the port; when that chip fails, the console looks completely normal but the TV gets nothing. The power supply is inside the console, so a surge after load shedding hits it directly.

Most common faults:

  • No picture — HDMI port damage or HDMI retimer chip failure
  • Loud fan and shutdowns from dust in the top exhaust
  • Dead after a surge — internal power supply
  • Disc version: drive won't read, take or eject discs
↓ See Xbox Series X prices

Xbox Series S (Model 1883)

Launched 2020 · 512GB white or 1TB black/white · digital only · built-in power supply

The Series S is the Xbox most South African homes bought, and because it's small it gets carried between the lounge and bedrooms — often with the HDMI cable still in. That makes HDMI port damage the number-one Series S repair. It has no disc drive, so the other faults come down to power, heat and storage, and nearly all of them cost a fraction of a replacement console.

Most common faults:

  • HDMI port damage from being moved while plugged in
  • No picture with a perfect-looking port — retimer chip
  • Overheating in closed TV cabinets
  • Dead after a surge — internal power supply

Xbox Series X|S faults we fix — and what each one usually means

No picture on the TV — HDMI port or retimer chip?

Try another HDMI cable and TV input first, then reset the display output. With no disc in the drive, switch the Xbox off by holding the Xbox button for 10 seconds. Then hold the Xbox button and the Eject button together (Series S and Digital Edition: the Xbox button and the Pair button) until you hear a second beep. The console starts in low resolution; if you now get a picture, it was a setting, not a fault.

If the screen is still black, look into the HDMI port with a torch. Bent or pushed-in pins mean the port needs replacing. If the port looks perfect, the retimer chip behind it is the usual suspect, especially after a power surge. We test both before quoting. HDMI port from R1,500 · retimer chip from R1,800.

Won't turn on, or clicks and dies

Both consoles have the power supply built in. If nothing happens when you press the power button — no light, no fan — after load shedding or a storm, the internal supply is the first suspect. If the light comes on and the console clicks off a few seconds later, the fault is more likely on the motherboard's power circuits.

Internal power supply from R1,800 · board-level power repair from R1,800. Unplug it and stop trying to switch it on after a surge: repeated attempts can turn a power-supply job into a board job.

Overheating, loud fan, shutting down mid-game

A Series X or Series S that's clean is very quiet. When the fan runs loud from the dashboard or the console switches off mid-game, the heatsink is usually blocked with dust and the thermal paste has dried out. Give the console space — the Series X needs a clear top, the Series S clear side and back vents — and keep it out of closed cabinets.

If it's still loud, it needs a full service: we strip it, clean the fan and heatsink, replace the thermal paste and test it under a full gaming load. Full service from R1,200.

"Something went wrong", E-codes and update loops

Codes like E100, E101, E102 and E106 mean the Xbox couldn't finish starting up or applying an update. Before booking, try Microsoft's Startup Troubleshooter and the Offline System Update, which reinstall the system software from a USB stick.

If the same error keeps coming back, the cause is usually the internal storage or the board. We test the storage, repair what's failed and reinstall the system software so the console comes back working. Storage repair from R1,500.

Storage errors and the expansion card slot

The internal SSD is what makes Quick Resume and fast loading possible, and when it starts failing you'll see games that won't install, corrupted saves or the console refusing to start. We diagnose the storage first and quote in writing before any work starts.

Running out of space is a different problem: both consoles have a Storage Expansion Card slot at the back, and games also run from external USB drives. That needs no repair at all. SSD / storage repair from R1,500.

Series X disc drive problems

Only the disc version of the Series X has a drive — the Series S and the Series X Digital Edition don't. A drive that grinds, won't take a disc, won't eject it or says the disc can't be read is either the tray mechanism or the laser. Clean the disc and try another one first.

Before you bring your Xbox in

  1. Your saves are probably safe. Xbox saves sync to the cloud when the console is online, and digital games are linked to your Microsoft account.
  2. Note any error code (E100, E102 and so on) or take a photo of the screen.
  3. Remove any disc and any Storage Expansion Card, and bring the power cable. No need for controllers unless they're part of the fault.
  4. After a surge, stop trying to switch it on. Repeated attempts can turn a power-supply repair into a board repair.
  5. You don't need to give us your Microsoft account password. We test on our own account.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A photo of the sticker on the back (Model 1882 or 1883) plus a line about what happens is usually enough for a starting price on WhatsApp.

How an Xbox repair works at iAssist

1. Free diagnostic

We test HDMI output and the retimer chip, the power supply, temperatures under load, the storage and the disc drive, and find the actual failed part — not just the symptom.

2. Written quote

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

3. Component-level repair

We replace the failed port, chip or module under a microscope rather than swapping the whole motherboard — which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.

4. Soak test & hand-over

Every repaired console runs a game under load before it goes back to you, then leaves with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

Xbox Series X|S repair — frequently asked questions

How much does Xbox Series X or Series S repair cost?

It depends on the fault. Starting prices: HDMI port from R1,500, HDMI retimer chip from R1,800, full service from R1,200, internal power supply from R1,800, storage repair from R1,500 and Series X disc drive repair from R1,200. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

My Xbox Series X turns on but there's no picture. Can you fix it?

Usually, yes. Try another cable and TV input, then reset the display: hold the Xbox and Eject buttons (Series S: Xbox and Pair) from off until the second beep. If there's still nothing, it's almost always the HDMI port or the HDMI retimer chip behind it. Port repairs start from R1,500 and retimer chip repairs from R1,800.

What is the HDMI retimer chip?

It's a small chip between the Xbox's processor and its HDMI port that cleans up the high-speed 4K signal before it reaches your TV. When it fails, the console powers on normally and the port can look perfect, but the TV gets no signal. It usually fails after a power surge and is replaced at component level.

Do you repair the Xbox Series S?

Yes — it's the Xbox we repair most. HDMI port damage is the most common Series S fault, followed by retimer chip, power supply and overheating problems. It has no disc drive, so there are no drive repairs.

My Xbox won't turn on after load shedding. What's wrong?

Usually the internal power supply, which takes the surge when the power comes back. Internal power supply repairs start from R1,800. If the light comes on but the console clicks off, the fault is more likely on the motherboard's power circuits, which we diagnose for free.

My Xbox says "Something went wrong". Can you fix it?

Often, yes. Codes like E100, E101, E102 and E106 mean the console couldn't finish starting or updating. Try Microsoft's Offline System Update first. If the error keeps coming back, the internal storage or the board is usually at fault; storage repairs start from R1,500.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. HDMI, power supply, fan and disc drive repairs don't touch your storage. Xbox saves sync to the cloud when the console is online, and digital games are tied to your Microsoft account, so you can download them again even after a storage repair.

How long does an Xbox Series X|S repair take?

Most repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test under gaming load. Board-level faults can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Is there a warranty on Xbox Series X|S repairs?

Yes. Every repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.

Can you collect my Xbox?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
