PS5 HDMI Port Repair Johannesburg
PS5 HDMI Port Repair Johannesburg
The PS5 turns on, the light goes white, and the TV says "no signal". Nine times out of ten that's the HDMI port: a cable yanked sideways, a console moved while plugged in, or a port that's simply worn loose. Sometimes it's the HDMI chip behind the port, which can fail after a power surge even when the port looks perfect. We check both under the microscope, replace only the part that's failed, and test the console at 4K before it goes back to you.

PS5 HDMI repair by model
PS5 original (CFI-1000, 1100 & 1200)
HDMI 2.1 port soldered to the motherboard · disc and Digital Edition
On the original PS5 the HDMI port sits at the back and is soldered straight onto the motherboard. The tall console is easy to knock, and every time it's moved or tilted with the cable still plugged in, the port takes the strain. Over time the solder joints crack or the pins bend, and the picture starts dropping out before it disappears completely. Replacing the port involves taking the console apart down to the motherboard, so we also clean the dust catchers and check the HDMI chip while it's open.
Most common faults:
- No signal after the console was moved or knocked
- Picture cuts out when the cable is touched
- Bent or pushed-in pins
- No picture after a power surge (HDMI chip)
PS5 Slim (CFI-2000 series)
HDMI 2.1 port soldered to the motherboard · smaller, lighter case
The Slim is light enough to carry from room to room, which is exactly how most Slim HDMI ports get damaged: the console is picked up with the cable still in, and the plug levers the port off the board. The repair is the same as on the original PS5 — the old port is removed, the pads are cleaned and the new port is soldered on and inspected under the microscope — but the Slim's tighter case means extra care with the ribbon cables on the way back together.
Most common faults:
- Port damaged by carrying the console with the cable in
- Loose plug that only works at an angle
- No signal after a surge (HDMI chip)
PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 & 7100 series)
HDMI 2.1 port · new, high-value board
The PS5 Pro is new enough that many are still under Sony's warranty, so check that first — but a port damaged by a pulled cable is usually treated as accidental damage. HDMI port replacement on the Pro is priced the same as on the other models. If the port is fine and the fault is the HDMI chip, we quote in writing after a free diagnostic, because Pro parts are newer and pricier.
Most common faults:
- Port damaged by a pulled or knocked cable
- No signal after a surge
- Flickering at 4K/120Hz
PS5 HDMI faults — and what each one usually means
No signal, but the console powers on
Rule out the simple things first: try another HDMI cable (ideally the one from the box), another HDMI input on the TV, and another TV if you have one. Then boot into safe mode by holding the power button until the second beep, about 7 seconds. If safe mode gives you a picture, the fault is a video setting, not hardware — lower the resolution under Settings → Screen and Video.
If there's still nothing, the HDMI port or the HDMI chip has failed. We inspect both under the microscope before quoting, so you only pay for the part that's actually broken. HDMI port from R1,800 · HDMI chip from R2,500.

Short black-outs, "sparkles" or sound dropping out usually mean a cracked solder joint or a worn pin in the port that only just makes contact. It often gets worse when the cable is touched or the console warms up. Try a new certified HDMI 2.1 cable first, because a damaged cable does the same thing. If that doesn't help, the port needs replacing before it fails completely. HDMI port from R1,800.

A plug that wobbles, falls out or only works if you hold it in a certain position means the port's metal shell or its solder joints have come loose from the board. Don't keep forcing it — pressing on a loose port can short neighbouring pins and damage the HDMI chip too, turning a port repair into a bigger one. HDMI port from R1,800.

Shine a torch into the port. If the centre tongue is bent, cracked or pushed back, or there are dark marks around the pins, the port is physically damaged and has to be replaced. Burn marks can also mean the HDMI chip took a hit, so we always test it after fitting the new port. HDMI port from R1,800 · HDMI chip from R2,500 if it's also damaged.

Behind the port is the HDMI chip (encoder IC), which turns the console's video into an HDMI signal. It's sensitive to surges from load shedding, lightning and faulty TV or soundbar connections, and it can fail while the port looks brand new. Replacing it is micro-soldering work done under the microscope, and we test the console at 4K before it goes back. We regularly see PS5s where a previous HDMI repair has failed: lifted pads, missing tiny parts next to the port, or a low-quality port. Many of these can still be rescued by rebuilding the damaged pads and fitting a proper port, but it takes longer than a normal repair. Bring it in for a free diagnostic and we'll tell you honestly whether it can be saved and what it will cost.

- Try safe mode and another cable first. Hold the power button until the second beep. If you get a picture, it isn't the port.
- Stop pushing the plug in. Forcing a loose cable can damage the HDMI chip as well as the port.
- Bring the HDMI cable you use so we can test it too.
- Your games and saves stay on the console. An HDMI repair doesn't touch the SSD.
- Tell us if it happened after a power surge — that points us towards the HDMI chip.
A photo into the HDMI port with a torch, plus the CFI- number from the label, is usually enough for us to tell you on WhatsApp whether it's the port.

1. Free diagnostic
We test the HDMI output on our own TV and cable, inspect the port and the HDMI chip under the microscope, and check for other faults while the console is open.
2. Written quote
You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

Common questionsPS5 HDMI port repair — frequently asked questions
How much does a PS5 HDMI port repair cost?
HDMI port replacement starts from R1,800 on the PS5 original, Slim and Pro. If the HDMI chip has also failed, chip replacement starts from R2,500 on the original and Slim; the Pro is quoted after a free diagnostic. You get the exact price in writing before any work starts.
How do I know if it's the HDMI port or the HDMI chip?
A port fault usually follows physical damage: the console was moved with the cable in, the plug feels loose, or the pins look bent. A chip fault usually follows a power surge, and the port looks perfect. We check both under the microscope before quoting, so you only pay for the part that's failed.
My PS5 has a white light but no picture. Is it the HDMI port?
Very often, yes. First try another HDMI cable, another TV input and safe mode (hold the power button until the second beep). If there's still no picture, the HDMI port or HDMI chip is the most likely cause.
Can a damaged HDMI cable cause this?
Yes. A cable with a bent plug or broken wires can cause flicker or no signal, and a bent plug can damage the port. Always try another cable first, and bring yours in so we can check it.
Will I lose my games and saves?
No. An HDMI repair doesn't touch the SSD, so your games, saves and settings stay exactly as they are.
How long does a PS5 HDMI repair take?
Most PS5 repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a test at 4K with a game running. HDMI chip repairs and rescues of previous repairs can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.
Is it worth repairing, or should I buy a new PS5?
An HDMI port repair costs a fraction of a new console, and you keep your games, saves and settings. For most PS5s it's clearly worth it.
How do I stop it happening again?
Never move or carry the console with the HDMI cable plugged in, leave some slack in the cable so it isn't pulling on the port, and plug the console into a surge protector to protect the HDMI chip from power surges.
Is there a warranty on PS5 HDMI repairs?
Yes. Every PS5 HDMI repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.
Can you collect my PS5?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
