Xbox One Hard Drive Replacement Johannesburg
Xbox One Hard Drive Replacement Johannesburg
A dashboard that takes minutes to appear. Games that freeze while they load. Updates that fail halfway, a console stuck on the Xbox logo, or a "Something went wrong" screen with E100, E101, E102 or E106. On an Xbox One, that's nearly always the internal hard drive wearing out — every model still boots from a mechanical drive, and most of them are now seven years old or more. We fit a new drive, or a much faster SSD, and reinstall the Xbox system software so the console starts like new.

Xbox One hard drives by model
Xbox One X (Model 1787)
1TB mechanical hard drive · runs hot · SSD makes the biggest difference
The One X has near-4K graphics but still boots from a 1TB mechanical hard drive, so it's often the drive, not the console, that makes it feel slow. Years of heat inside its dense case don't help the drive either. An SSD upgrade suits the One X best: menus and loading screens get noticeably faster. If it's also loud, it's worth a service while it's open.
Most common faults:
- Slow dashboard and long load screens
- E-codes after a failed update
- Drive wearing out from years of heat
Xbox One S & One S All-Digital (Model 1681)
500GB, 1TB or 2TB mechanical hard drive · the Xbox One we see most
The One S is the Xbox One we see most for hard drive faults. Many are now well past their best, and the signs are painfully slow loading, games that freeze, and updates that fail. The All-Digital Edition depends on its drive even more, because every game lives on it. A new drive or SSD with a fresh system install brings it back.
Most common faults:
- "Something went wrong" and update loops
- Games freezing while loading
- Slow even after a factory reset
Xbox One original (Model 1540)
500GB or 1TB mechanical hard drive · the oldest drives
The original Xbox One has the oldest hard drives of all, and its 500GB drive is now the main reason these consoles crawl. A classic sign is a console that gets stuck on the green start-up screen or the Xbox logo and never reaches the dashboard. Replacing the drive, ideally with an SSD, makes an original Xbox One feel far quicker than it did new.
Most common faults:
- Stuck on the green start-up screen
- Very slow dashboard
- E-codes and failed updates
Xbox One hard drive faults — what's happening and how we fix it
Very slow dashboard, games freezing while they load
A worn hard drive reads slower and slower, so the dashboard takes minutes to appear and games stall on loading screens. Clear some space and restart the console fully first (hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds). If it's still crawling, the drive is the usual cause.
We test the drive's health, then fit a new drive or an SSD and reinstall the system software. Hard drive replacement from R1,800 · SSD upgrade: free quote.

These codes mean the Xbox couldn't finish starting or applying an update. Try Microsoft's Offline System Update first: it reinstalls the system software from a USB stick and fixes some of these without a repair. The console's troubleshooter also has a reset that keeps your games and apps.
If the same code keeps coming back, the hard drive is very often failing. We replace it and reinstall the system software. From R1,800.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Stuck on the Xbox logo or the green start-up screen
A console that powers on but never gets past the Xbox logo, or the green start-up screen on the original Xbox One, usually can't read its system files from the drive. A full power cycle (unplug for a minute) is worth trying first.
If it's still stuck, we test the drive and replace it if it's failed. If the drive is fine, we look at the board and quote before any work. Hard drive replacement from R1,800.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Clicking, ticking or grinding from inside
A healthy hard drive is almost silent. Repeated clicking or ticking, especially with freezes, means the drive is failing mechanically. Stop using the console if you can — the longer a failing drive runs, the worse it gets. A whirring or grinding noise from the disc slot is the disc drive, not the hard drive, so mention which you hear.

If the console works but you've run out of space, that's not a fault. Any Xbox One can install and run games from an external USB 3.0 drive of 128GB or more. Plug one in, format it when the console asks, and move games across. If you'd rather have more space inside, we can fit a bigger drive or SSD instead.

Because every Xbox One boots from a mechanical drive, swapping it for an SSD makes the dashboard, start-up and loading screens noticeably faster. If your drive needs replacing anyway, an SSD is the best upgrade you can give an Xbox One. We fit it, reinstall the system software, and quote by the size you want.

- Let your saves sync. If the console still connects, sign in online so your saves upload to the cloud.
- Note the error code or take a photo of the screen.
- Try Microsoft's Offline System Update if you're comfortable with a USB stick.
- Tell us if you want an SSD, and what size, so we can quote for it.
- You don't need to give us your Microsoft account password. We test on our own account.
A photo of the error screen or the code, plus the Model number from the sticker, is usually enough for us to tell you on WhatsApp whether it's the drive.

Common questionsXbox One hard drive replacement — frequently asked questions
How much does an Xbox One hard drive replacement cost?
Hard drive replacement with a full system reinstall starts from R1,800 on the Xbox One, One S and One X. An SSD upgrade is quoted by the size you want. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing first.
Why is my Xbox One so slow?
Almost always because its mechanical hard drive is wearing out. Most Xbox Ones are now seven years old or more, and a tired drive makes the dashboard and games load very slowly before it fails completely.
What does E100, E101, E102 or E106 mean?
The console couldn't finish starting up or applying an update. Try Microsoft's Offline System Update first. If the code keeps coming back, the hard drive is very often the cause.
Will I lose my games and saves?
Saves that synced to the cloud come back when you sign in, and digital games can be downloaded again from your Microsoft account. Anything that never synced, such as unsynced saves or local captures, may be lost with a failed drive, so let the console sync first if it still works.
Can I put an SSD in my Xbox One?
Yes. We replace the internal hard drive with an SSD and reinstall the Xbox system software. Start-up and loading times drop noticeably.
Can I just use an external hard drive instead?
If the console works and you only need space, yes — an external USB 3.0 drive of 128GB or more can hold and run games. If the internal drive is failing, the console still needs the internal drive replaced, because it starts from it.
Can I replace the hard drive myself?
It's possible, but the console has to be fully opened and the new drive needs the Xbox system software set up correctly before it will start. We do both and test the console before it goes back.
My Xbox One is stuck on the green screen. Is it the hard drive?
Usually, yes. On the original Xbox One, getting stuck on the green start-up screen is a classic sign the console can't read its system files from the drive.
How long does a hard drive replacement take?
Most are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including the system install, updates and a game test. If a particular SSD has to be ordered, we'll tell you upfront.
Can you collect my Xbox?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
