Xbox One Power Supply Repair Johannesburg
Xbox One Power Supply Repair Johannesburg
You press the Xbox button and nothing happens, or the console lights up and switches straight off. Most of the time it happened the moment the power came back after load shedding or a storm. Where the fault is depends on which Xbox One you have: the One S and One X have their power supply built in, while the original Xbox One runs from an external power brick. We test the supply or brick first, then the board's power circuits, and replace only what's failed.

Xbox One power faults by model
Xbox One X (Model 1787)
Internal power supply · figure-8 power cable · runs hot
The One X packs a lot of power into a small case, with its power supply built in and fed by a figure-8 cable. Years of heat are hard on that supply, and a surge after load shedding often finishes it off. A dead One X usually has a failed internal supply and a healthy board — we test the supply's output on the bench before quoting, so you know which it is. If it also runs loud, it's worth a service while it's open.
Most common faults:
- Dead after load shedding or a storm
- Lights up, then switches straight off
- Switching off under load after years of heat
Xbox One S & One S All-Digital (Model 1681)
Internal power supply · figure-8 power cable · no brick to test
The One S moved the power supply inside the console, so when a One S won't start after a storm or load shedding, the internal supply is the first suspect — there's no brick to swap. Before you bring it in, try another figure-8 cable and plug it straight into the wall. The All-Digital Edition is the same console with no disc drive, and gets the same repair.
Most common faults:
- Dead after a surge
- No light at all when the button is pressed
- Clicks on and straight off
Xbox One original (Model 1540)
External power brick · the brick's light tells you a lot
The original Xbox One runs from a large external power brick, which makes power faults easier to narrow down. Look at the light on the brick: solid white or solid orange means the brick is working; no light at all, or a flickering light, points to the brick. If the brick looks healthy but the console still won't start, the fault is in the console's own power circuits. Bring the brick with the console so we can test both.
Most common faults:
- Brick light off or flickering
- Brick fine, console still dead
- Dead after a surge
Xbox One power faults — what's happening and how we fix it
Completely dead — no light, no sound
Start with the simple things. Try another power cable and another wall socket, plugged in directly rather than through a multiplug. Unplug the console for at least 10 seconds, plug it back in and press the Xbox button on the console. On the original Xbox One, check the brick's light too.
If there's still nothing on a One S or One X, the internal power supply is the most likely cause. We test its output on the bench before quoting. Internal power supply from R1,200.

When the power comes back after load shedding, or lightning hits the grid, there's often a spike. On the One S and One X it hits the internal supply first; on the original Xbox One it hits the brick. Stop trying to switch it on once it's dead — repeated attempts can spread the damage to the board.
In most cases replacing the supply, or the brick on the original, brings it back. If the surge got further, we test the board's power circuits and quote for everything before any work starts. Power supply from R1,200 · board-level power repair from R1,500.

Unplug the brick from the console and the wall for a few minutes, then plug it into the wall only. A solid white or orange light means the brick is fine and the fault is in the console. No light, or a light that flickers, means the brick has failed.
Bring the brick and the console together. We test both, and if the brick is the problem we source a replacement and quote before ordering it. Power brick: free quote.

If the Xbox logo lights for a moment and the console turns straight off, power is reaching the board but something stops it starting. It can be a supply that collapses as soon as the console draws more power, or a short on the board. If it starts but shuts down after a while in games, that's more often heat — see Xbox One overheating.
We test the supply under load and then the board's power stages, so you only pay for the part that's failed. From R1,200.

Unplug the console — and on the original, the brick — from the wall straight away and don't try it again. A pop or a burning smell usually means a component in the power supply has failed. Don't open the console or the brick: they hold mains voltage, and can stay charged after they're unplugged.
We open it safely, check whether the damage stopped at the supply, and quote in writing. Power supply from R1,200.

If the supply or brick delivers the right voltages and the Xbox still won't start, the fault is on the motherboard — usually a shorted component or a failed power-management chip on one of the power rails. We find it with the board on the bench, replace the failed part under the microscope and test the console under load. Board-level power repair from R1,500.

- Try another power cable and socket first, plugged straight into the wall.
- Original Xbox One? Check the brick's light, and bring the brick with the console.
- After a surge, stop pressing the button. Repeated attempts can turn a power-supply repair into a board repair.
- Don't open the console or the brick. Both hold mains voltage even when unplugged.
- Your games and saves stay as they are. A power repair doesn't touch the hard drive.
A line about what happened when it died, the Model number from the sticker and, on the original Xbox One, a photo of the brick's light, is usually enough for us to give you a starting price on WhatsApp.

Xbox One power supply repair — frequently asked questions
How much does an Xbox One power supply repair cost?
Internal power supply replacement on the One S and One X starts from R1,200. Board-level power repair starts from R1,500 on every model. On the original Xbox One, the power brick is tested free and a replacement is quoted. You get the exact price in writing before any work starts.
My Xbox One won't turn on after load shedding. Can it be fixed?
Usually, yes. The surge most often damages the power supply — inside the console on the One S and One X, or the brick on the original — and leaves the rest of the console untouched. Stop trying to switch it on, and bring it in for a free diagnostic.
Does my Xbox One have a power brick?
Only the original 2013 Xbox One (Model 1540) has an external power brick. The One S and One X have the power supply built in and use a figure-8 cable.
What does the light on the Xbox One power brick mean?
Solid white or solid orange means the brick is working. No light, or a flickering light, means the brick has probably failed.
Can a bad power cable stop my Xbox One turning on?
Yes. A damaged cable, a loose plug or a tripped multiplug can all look like a dead console. Always try another cable and wall socket first.
How do I protect my Xbox One from load shedding?
Plug it into a good surge protector, switch it off at the wall before scheduled load shedding, and wait a few minutes after the power returns before switching it back on.
Will I lose my games and saves?
No. A power repair doesn't touch the hard drive, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are.
Is it worth repairing an old Xbox One?
Usually, yes — a power repair costs far less than a replacement console. If the hard drive is also worn out, we'll tell you, and it can be swapped for an SSD at the same time.
How long does an Xbox One power repair take?
Most repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test under load. A replacement brick or board-level repair can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.
Can you collect my Xbox?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
