Nintendo Switch Charging Port Repair Johannesburg

Nintendo Switch Charging Port Repair Johannesburg

No charging light, a cable that only works when you hold it at an angle, a Switch that died the day you tried a new dock, or a battery that won't hold a charge. Every Switch charges through a single USB-C port, and the same port carries the TV picture on the original and OLED, so it takes a lot of wear. When it stops charging, the cause is usually the port itself or the charging chip behind it on the board. We test which one it is, replace just that part, and give you a written price before any work starts.

Switch charging by model

Original Switch (HAC-001, 2017 & 2019)

One USB-C port for charging and TV output · the model most affected by third-party docks

The original Switch charges and sends its TV picture through the same USB-C port on the bottom, so every dock and charger connects to the same small set of chips. That's why it's the model most affected by cheap third-party docks and non-standard chargers: the wrong voltage can damage the charging chip, and a Switch that suddenly won't charge, or won't charge and won't show on the TV, is the classic result. The port itself also wears from years of docking and undocking.

Most common faults:

  • Won't charge after a third-party dock
  • Loose port from docking wear
  • No charging and no TV picture at the same time
  • Battery wearing out on 2017 consoles
↓ See Switch prices

Switch OLED (HEG-001)

Same USB-C charging design as the 2019 Switch · charges in its own dock or by cable

Inside, the OLED charges the same way as the 2019 Switch, and its charging chip is just as sensitive to the wrong dock or charger. The OLED dock is a better design than the original, but third-party docks and multi-port USB-C hubs still cause most of the charging faults we see. If an OLED charges by cable but not in its dock, test it in another official dock before assuming the console is at fault.

Most common faults:

  • Not charging after a third-party dock or hub
  • Port damage from a cable pulled sideways
  • Charging in handheld but not in the dock
  • Battery fading after years of daily charging
↓ See Switch OLED prices

Switch Lite (HDH-001)

Charges by cable only · no dock, no TV mode · the port gets the most wear

The Lite has no dock, so every single charge goes through its USB-C port, often while someone is playing with the cable bending. That makes a worn or loose port its most common charging fault, and pocket lint packed into the port is a close second. Look inside with a torch first: if there's fluff, ease it out gently with a wooden toothpick, never anything metal. If the cable still only works at an angle, the port needs replacing.

Most common faults:

  • Charges only when the cable is held at an angle
  • Lint packed into the port
  • Not charging after a cheap charger
  • Battery dying in an hour or two
↓ See Switch Lite prices

Switch 2

Launched June 2025 · USB-C ports on the top and bottom · quoted after a free check

The Switch 2 has two USB-C ports, one on the bottom and one on the top, so a damaged port doesn't always stop it charging. Try the other port before anything else. It's still a new console, so check Nintendo's warranty first if the fault happened on its own. Out of warranty, or after accidental damage, we check it for free and quote in writing, because Switch 2 parts are still limited and their prices change.

Most common faults:

  • One USB-C port loose or not charging
  • Not charging after a third-party charger or dock
  • Not charging in the dock

Switch charging faults — what's happening and how we fix it

Won't charge at all — no charging icon

Use the official Nintendo charger and leave it plugged in for at least an hour, because a completely flat battery can take a while to show the charging icon. Then hold the power button for 15 seconds to force a restart, and try a different wall socket.

If there's still nothing, we test the port, the charging chip and the battery to find which one has failed. USB-C port from R850 · charging/power IC from R1,200 · Switch 2: free quote.

Cable is loose or only charges at an angle

Shine a torch into the port. Lint and dirt get packed in and stop the plug going all the way in, especially on a Lite that lives in a pocket. Ease it out with a wooden toothpick, never a pin or anything metal. If the plug now clicks in firmly, the problem may be solved.

If the cable still wobbles, falls out or only charges when held at an angle, the port's contacts or its solder joints are worn. We replace the USB-C port and test charging and, on the original and OLED, TV output too. USB-C port replacement from R850.

Stopped charging after a new dock or charger

This is the most common Switch charging fault we see. Cheap third-party docks, car chargers and some multi-port USB-C hubs can send the wrong voltage, and the chip on the board that manages charging takes the damage. Stop using that dock or charger straight away, and don't keep plugging the console in to test it.

We replace the damaged chip at component level rather than swapping the whole board, which is why it costs a fraction of a new console. If the TV picture has also gone, we check the video chip at the same time. Charging/power IC repair from R1,200.

Charges by cable, but not in the dock

If the console charges fine from the cable but not in the dock, try it in another official dock. If it charges there, the fault is in your dock: its power cable, its USB-C connector or its power board. If it won't charge in any dock, the console's port is often the cause, since docking puts the most strain on it.

The Switch Lite has no dock. On the Switch 2, use the Switch 2 dock, because older Switch docks aren't designed for it. Console port from R850 · dock repairs: free quote.

Battery drains fast, or the back is bulging

Every Switch battery loses capacity after a few years of daily charging. If yours now dies far sooner than it used to, or switches off with battery still showing, the battery is worn out. A new battery brings back the original play time.

If the back of the console looks pushed out, or the screen is lifting, stop charging it and bring it in. That's a swollen battery and it needs replacing straight away. Battery replacement from R850 · Switch 2: free quote.

Shows the charging icon, but won't turn on

If the charging icon appears but the console won't start, leave it to charge for an hour, then hold the power button for 15 seconds. If it still won't start, the fault may be the battery, the power circuit or the board rather than the port.

We check the whole console for free and tell you exactly what's failed, with one written quote. For other Switch faults, see Switch repairs.

Before you bring your Switch in

  1. Stop using any third-party dock or charger if the fault started after you used one, and bring it in so we can check it.
  2. Bring the official charger and dock so we can test them with the console.
  3. Back up your saves with Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves if the console still works. Port and charging repairs don't touch your data.
  4. If the back is bulging, stop charging it. That's a swollen battery.
  5. You don't need to give us your Nintendo account password.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A photo of the port (or a short video of the cable wobbling), plus a line about which charger or dock you were using when it stopped, is usually enough for us to tell you on WhatsApp what's likely involved.

Switch charging port repair — frequently asked questions

How much does a Switch charging port repair cost?

A USB-C charging port replacement starts from R850 on the original Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite. If the charging chip on the board has failed, that repair starts from R1,200. Switch 2 charging repairs are quoted after a free check. You get the exact price in writing first.

Why won't my Switch charge?

Usually a worn or dirty USB-C port, or a charging chip damaged by a third-party dock or charger. A completely flat battery can also take a while to show the charging icon, so leave it on the official charger for an hour first.

Can a third-party dock damage my Switch?

Yes. Cheap docks, car chargers and some USB-C hubs can send the wrong voltage and damage the charging chip. It's the most common cause of Switch charging faults we see. Use the official dock and charger where you can.

Is it the port or the charging chip?

If the cable wobbles or only charges at an angle, it's usually the port. If the cable fits firmly but nothing happens, especially after a new dock or charger, it's usually the chip. We test both before quoting.

Can I clean the charging port myself?

Yes, carefully. Shine a torch in and ease out any lint with a wooden toothpick. Don't use metal, compressed air at close range or liquids. If the plug still doesn't sit firmly, the port needs replacing.

My Switch charges by cable but not in the dock. What's wrong?

Try another official dock. If it charges there, your dock is at fault. If it won't charge in any dock, the console's port is usually the cause.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. Port, charging chip and battery repairs don't touch the console's storage, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are.

My Switch 2 won't charge. Can you fix it?

Yes. Try its other USB-C port first, and check Nintendo's warranty if the fault happened on its own. Out of warranty, we check it for free and quote in writing.

How long does a Switch charging repair take?

Most USB-C port and charging chip repairs are done within 2–3 working days after you approve the quote, including a full charge test. If a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you upfront.

Can you collect my Switch?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
