Nintendo Switch Screen Repair Johannesburg

Nintendo Switch Screen Repair Johannesburg

A Switch that slipped out of a bag, a cracked corner after a drop, lines across the picture, a black screen while the game keeps playing, or touch that stopped responding. Switch screens are one of the repairs we do most, and how we fix one depends on the model. The original Switch has a separate touch glass and LCD, so sometimes only the glass needs replacing. The OLED's panel and glass are bonded together. The Lite and Switch 2 have their own screens. We tell you which part has failed and give you a written price before any work starts.

Switch screens by model

Original Switch (HAC-001, 2017 & 2019)

6.2-inch LCD · touch glass and LCD are separate parts · glass-only repair often possible

The original Switch has a 6.2-inch LCD with a separate touch glass on top. That matters, because a cracked glass with a perfect picture underneath can often be fixed by replacing only the glass. If the picture has lines, black patches or ink-like blots, the LCD underneath is damaged and that's the part we replace. The 2017 and 2019 models use the same screen, so the repair and the price are the same.

Most common faults:

  • Cracked corner after a drop
  • Cracked glass over a picture that still works
  • Lines or blots on the LCD
  • Touch dead or patchy
↓ See Switch prices

Switch OLED (HEG-001)

7-inch OLED · panel and glass bonded as one part · anti-shatter film on the glass

The Switch OLED's 7-inch screen is a single bonded part: the OLED panel, touch layer and glass are replaced together, which is why it costs more than the original Switch. It leaves the factory with a thin anti-shatter film on the glass. Don't peel it off, because it holds the glass together if it cracks. OLED panels can also show burn-in, a faint ghost of a menu or health bar that stays on screen.

Most common faults:

  • Cracked glass after a drop
  • Coloured lines or black patches
  • Burn-in from a static image
  • Touch not responding
↓ See Switch OLED prices

Switch Lite (HDH-001)

5.5-inch LCD touchscreen · handheld only, no TV mode · screen replaced as one part

The Switch Lite has a smaller 5.5-inch screen, and because it's handheld only it travels in bags and pockets more than any other Switch, so it cracks more too. There's no TV mode, so a Lite with a broken screen can't be played at all until it's fixed. We replace the screen, test touch across the whole panel, and check the sticks and buttons while it's open.

Most common faults:

  • Cracked screen from a bag or pocket
  • Black screen while the console still makes sounds
  • Lines after a drop
  • Touch not working
↓ See Switch Lite prices

Switch 2

Launched June 2025 · 7.9-inch 1080p screen · quoted after a free check

The Switch 2 has a larger 7.9-inch 1080p screen and is still a new console, so check Nintendo's warranty before you pay for anything. Accidental damage like a crack usually isn't covered, but a screen that failed on its own may be. Switch 2 screen parts are still limited and their prices change, so we check the console for free and quote every Switch 2 screen repair in writing.

Most common faults:

  • Cracked screen after a drop
  • Lines or dark patches
  • Touch not responding

Switch screen faults — what's happening and how we fix it

Cracked glass, but the picture is still fine

On the original Switch the touch glass sits on top of the LCD, so a crack is often only in the glass. If the picture underneath is clear, with no lines or blots, usually only the glass needs replacing. On the Switch OLED, Lite and Switch 2 the glass and display are replaced together.

Keep using it as little as possible and put it in a case. Pressure on a cracked screen is how a glass-only repair becomes an LCD repair. Original Switch from R950 · Lite from R1,200 · OLED from R2,500 · Switch 2: free quote.

Lines, colours, black patches or ink-like blots

Lines across the picture, coloured bands, black patches or a spreading dark blot mean the display itself is damaged, usually from a drop or pressure in a bag. It won't get better on its own, and a blot tends to spread.

We replace the LCD on the original Switch and Lite, or the bonded panel on the OLED and Switch 2. Original Switch from R950 · Lite from R1,200 · OLED from R2,500.

Touch not working, or touching the wrong spot

First take off any screen protector that has lifted or bubbled, clean the screen, and restart the console fully (hold the power button for 3 seconds, then choose Power Options → Restart). If touch still doesn't respond, or it responds in the wrong place, the touch layer is damaged.

On the original Switch the touch layer is part of the glass. On the other models it's part of the screen. Touch faults after a drop are almost always the screen, not the console. From R950 on the original Switch.

Black screen, but the game still plays

If you can hear the game, or the console works when it's docked to the TV, the console itself is fine and the fault is in the screen or the cable that connects it. The Switch Lite has no TV mode, so listen for the startup sound and button clicks instead.

We check the display connector and the backlight first, because sometimes the screen is fine and only the connection has failed. Then we quote for whichever part has failed. Screen replacement from R950 · connector faults quoted after a free check.

Ghost image on a Switch OLED (burn-in)

A faint shadow of a menu, health bar or score that stays on screen in every game is OLED burn-in. Turn on Screen Burn-in Reduction under System Settings → System and lower the brightness. It usually can't be reversed, but you can stop it getting worse.

If it bothers you, replacing the OLED panel removes it completely. The original Switch, Lite and Switch 2 have LCD screens, which don't burn in. OLED screen replacement from R2,500.

Dropped, and now it won't turn on

A hard drop can crack the screen and also damage the charging port, battery connector or board. Charge it for 30 minutes on the original charger, then hold the power button for 15 seconds. If the screen stays black and you hear nothing, the fault may be more than the screen.

We check the whole console for free and tell you exactly what's damaged, with one written quote. For power faults, see Switch repairs.

Before you bring your Switch in

  1. Back up your saves with Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves if the console still works. A screen repair doesn't touch your saves, but it's good practice.
  2. Leave the anti-shatter film on a cracked OLED. It's holding the glass together.
  3. Put it in a case or wrap it so loose glass doesn't scratch you or spread the crack.
  4. Bring only the console. You don't need the dock or the Joy-Cons for a screen repair, unless something else is wrong with them too.
  5. Tell us your model (the number on the back) so we can confirm the part and the price before you come in.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A photo of the screen switched on, plus the model number from the back, is usually enough for us to tell you on WhatsApp whether it's the glass, the display or something else.

1. Free diagnostic

We check the screen and touch, test the console docked or by sound, and confirm whether it's the glass, the display, the connector or something else before quoting.

Switch screen repair — frequently asked questions

How much does a Switch screen repair cost?

Original Switch touch glass or LCD replacement starts from R950, Switch Lite screens from R1,200 and Switch OLED screens from R2,500. Switch 2 screens are quoted after a free check. You get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

Why is the Switch OLED screen more expensive?

Its OLED panel, touch layer and glass are bonded into one part, so they're replaced together. On the original Switch the glass and LCD are separate, so a crack can often be fixed by replacing only the glass.

My screen is cracked but works fine. Do I need a new LCD?

On the original Switch, usually not. If the picture under the crack is clear, only the touch glass is usually replaced. On the OLED, Lite and Switch 2, the glass and display are one part.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. A screen repair doesn't touch the console's storage, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are.

My Switch screen is black but I can hear the game. What's wrong?

The console is working, so it's the screen, its backlight or the cable connecting it. If it shows a picture on the TV when docked, that confirms it. We check the connector first, because sometimes the screen itself is fine.

Can OLED burn-in be fixed?

Turning on Screen Burn-in Reduction and lowering the brightness stops it getting worse, but it usually can't be reversed. Replacing the OLED panel removes it completely.

Should I peel the film off my cracked Switch OLED?

No. The OLED has an anti-shatter film on the glass that holds it together when it cracks. Leave it on until the screen is replaced.

Is a Switch 2 screen covered by Nintendo's warranty?

Accidental damage like a crack usually isn't covered, but a screen that failed on its own may be, so check with Nintendo first. Out of warranty, we quote after a free check.

How long does a Switch screen repair take?

Most original Switch and Lite screens are done within 1–2 working days after you approve the quote. OLED and Switch 2 screens can take longer if the part has to be ordered, and we'll tell you upfront.

Can you collect my Switch?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
