Nintendo Switch Repair Johannesburg

Nintendo Switch Repair Johannesburg

The original Switch is the one most families still have, and after years of being docked, undocked and handed around, it's usually the Joy-Cons, the screen or the charging that gives up first. The good news is that it's the cheapest Switch to repair. The touch glass and the LCD are separate parts, the charging and video chips can be replaced on their own, and drifting Joy-Cons are a quick fix. We find the part that failed and replace just that. Free diagnostic, written quote, 6-month warranty.

Is it an original Switch — and which one? Check in 30 seconds

Turn the console over and look at the serial number along the bottom edge. XAW is the 2017 launch model (HAC-001). XKW is the 2019 model with a more efficient chip and a much longer battery life (HAC-001(-01), sold in a red box). Both have a 6.2-inch screen, a thin kickstand on the back and Joy-Cons that slide down rails on the sides. On screen: System Settings → System → Serial Information.

Switch, dock and Joy-Con — what goes wrong

Original Switch console (2017 and 2019)

6.2-inch LCD · 32GB storage · HAC-001 (2017) and HAC-001(-01) (2019, longer battery)

Unlike the OLED, the original Switch has a separate touch glass on top of the LCD. If the picture is still fine under the cracks, often only the glass needs replacing. The USB-C port at the bottom carries both power and the TV picture, so a worn port or a blown charging chip can affect charging and TV mode at the same time. This is the model most affected by cheap third-party docks, which can send the wrong voltage and take out the charging chip or the video chip.

Most common faults:

  • Cracked touch glass or damaged LCD
  • Won't charge or turn on after a non-Nintendo dock or charger
  • No TV output while handheld works
  • Joy-Cons not detected on the rails
  • Short battery life and fan noise on 2017 consoles
↓ See Switch prices

Original Switch dock

Black dock · HDMI out, 2 USB ports on the side · hinged back cover

The original dock holds the HDMI port, so a TV fault can be in the dock rather than the console. We test both. If the console charges and plays in handheld but shows no picture in any dock, the fault is in the console; if it works in another dock, it's the dock. Its hinged back cover hides the power and HDMI cables, which sometimes work loose.

Most common faults:

  • No picture on the TV — dock HDMI port or the console's video chip
  • Dock not charging the console
  • Loose USB-C connector inside the dock
↓ See Switch dock prices

Joy-Con and the Joy-Con rails

Original Joy-Con · drift repair or Hall Effect upgrade · rail repairs on the console

Joy-Con drift is the classic Switch fault: the stick sensor wears with use and dust gets in, until the stick registers movement you're not making. We replace the worn stick module, or fit a Hall Effect stick that uses magnets so it won't wear out the same way. If a Joy-Con isn't detected when you slide it on, the fault can be in the Joy-Con or in the metal rail on the side of the console, so bring both.

Most common faults:

  • Stick drift
  • Joy-Con not detected or loose on the rails
  • SL/SR or shoulder buttons not responding

Switch faults we fix — and what each one usually means

Joy-Con drift

Your character walks off on their own, the camera keeps turning or menus scroll by themselves. Try recalibrating under System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks. If the drift comes back, the stick sensor is worn and needs replacing.

Cracked glass, lines or touch not working

On the original Switch, the touch glass and the LCD underneath are separate. If the glass is cracked but the picture is fine, often only the glass needs replacing. If there are lines, black patches or no picture, the LCD itself is damaged.

Touch glass or LCD replacement from R950.

Won't charge or won't turn on

Leave it on the official Nintendo charger for at least an hour, because a completely flat battery can take a while to show the charging icon. Then hold the power button for 15 seconds. If nothing happens, the cause is usually a damaged USB-C port or the charging chip on the board.

That chip is the part most often blown by cheap third-party docks, car chargers and non-standard USB-C chargers. We replace it at component level rather than swapping the whole board. USB-C port from R850 · charging/power IC repair from R1,200.

Works in handheld, but no picture on the TV

Check the dock's power and HDMI cables, try another TV input, and if possible try the console in a friend's official dock. If it works there, the dock is at fault. If it doesn't, the console's video chip, which sends the picture out through the USB-C port, has usually failed. This often happens right after a third-party dock was used.

The Switch has no HDMI port of its own; the HDMI is on the dock. Console video IC repair from R1,100 · dock repair: free quote.

Joy-Con not detected or loose on the rails

If a Joy-Con slides on but the console doesn't see it, or it feels loose and falls off, the metal rail on the console or the connector on the Joy-Con is worn or bent. Try the Joy-Con on the other side and try a different Joy-Con: that tells us which part has the fault. Rail repairs are quoted after a free diagnostic.

Battery drains fast, loud fan or game cards not read

The 2017 Switch already has a shorter battery life than the 2019 model, and after years of daily charging every Switch battery loses capacity. A loud fan or a hot console in the dock usually means dust in the fan and dried thermal paste. Battery replacement from R850 · fan & thermal service from R650.

If game cards stop being read, try a second card first. If none work, the slot's pins are usually bent or the reader is worn, and we quote that after a free diagnostic.

Before you bring your Switch in

  1. Back up your saves. Switch save data lives on the console's internal memory, not the microSD card. With Nintendo Switch Online, check that cloud backup is on.
  2. Bring the dock and charger if the fault is charging or TV output, so we can test them too.
  3. Bring both Joy-Cons if one isn't detected, so we can tell whether the fault is in the Joy-Con or the rail.
  4. If it started after a new dock or charger, tell us, and don't use it again until we've checked it.
  5. You don't need to give us your Nintendo account password.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A photo of the back of your Switch (the serial number starts with XAW or XKW) plus a line about what happens is usually enough for a starting price on WhatsApp.

How a Switch repair works at iAssist

1. Free diagnostic

We test charging, the screen and touch, both Joy-Con rails, TV output through the dock, the game card slot and the fan, and find the actual failed part — not just the symptom.

2. Written quote

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

3. Component-level repair

We replace the failed port, chip or module under a microscope rather than swapping the whole motherboard — which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.

4. Tested before hand-over

Every repaired Switch is charged, docked and played in handheld and TV mode before it goes back to you, with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

Repairing a different Switch?

Nintendo Switch repair — frequently asked questions

How much does a Nintendo Switch screen repair cost?

From R950. The touch glass and the LCD are separate parts on the original Switch, so if the picture still works under the cracks, often only the glass needs replacing. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

How do I know if I have the 2017 or 2019 Switch?

Check the serial number on the back. XAW is the 2017 model and XKW is the 2019 model with the longer battery life. Both are repaired the same way and at the same prices.

How much is Joy-Con drift repair?

From R400 per Joy-Con, or from R650 for a Hall Effect stick upgrade that doesn't wear out the same way.

My Switch won't charge. What's wrong?

First leave it on the official charger for an hour, then hold the power button for 15 seconds. If it still won't charge, the USB-C port (from R850) or the charging chip on the board (from R1,200) has usually failed. Third-party docks and chargers are the most common cause.

My Switch works in handheld but not on the TV. Is it the dock?

Try the console in another official dock. If it works there, the dock is at fault. If not, the console's video chip has usually failed; that repair starts from R1,100. The Switch has no HDMI port of its own — it's on the dock.

My Joy-Con isn't detected when I slide it on. Can you fix it?

Yes. The fault is either in the Joy-Con's connector or in the rail on the side of the console. Bring both Joy-Cons and the console, and we'll find which part has failed and quote after a free diagnostic.

Is it worth repairing an old Switch?

Usually, yes. Most repairs, including the screen, charging port and Joy-Con drift, cost far less than a new console, and you keep your console and everything on it.

Will I lose my games and save data?

Screen, Joy-Con, battery and charging repairs don't touch your data. Saves live on the console's internal memory, not the microSD card, so turn on Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup before the repair if you can. If a board-level repair puts data at risk, we tell you first.

How long does a Switch repair take?

Joy-Con repairs are often done within 1–2 working days. Most console repairs take 3–5 working days after you approve the quote; board-level work can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Can you collect my Switch?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
