PS5 Disc Drive Repair Johannesburg

PS5 Disc Drive Repair Johannesburg

The PS5 says it can't read the disc, a game is stuck inside and won't come out, or the drive grinds every time you put something in. Disc faults come down to two parts: the mechanism that loads and spins the disc, and the laser that reads it. We test both, tell you which one has failed, and repair only that — and we always check the disc itself first, because a scratched disc is the cheapest fix of all.

Not sure which PS5 you have? Check the label

Look at the label on the back or underside of the console — the model number starts with CFI-. If there's no disc slot at all, you have a Digital Edition or a Pro without the add-on drive.

PS5 disc drive faults by model

PS5 original Disc Edition (CFI-1000, 1100 & 1200)

Built-in Ultra HD Blu-ray drive · front-loading slot · the Digital Edition has no drive

The original Disc Edition has its drive built into the console, behind the slot on the front. Years of use wear the loading mechanism, dust settles on the laser lens, and the classic symptoms appear: discs that take a long time to start, 'cannot read disc' errors, grinding while installing, or a disc that won't come out. We take the drive out, find whether it's the mechanism or the laser, and repair or replace the failed part.

Most common faults:

  • CE-100005-6 'cannot read disc'
  • Grinding or rattling while installing
  • Disc stuck and won't eject
  • 4K movies failing first
↓ See PS5 original prices

PS5 Slim (CFI-2000 series)

Detachable disc drive · pairs with the console online · also fits the Digital Slim

On the Slim the drive is a separate unit that clips onto the side and connects through a port. The first time it's attached, it pairs with that console online. So a Slim drive problem can be the mechanism or laser, like any drive, or the connection and pairing between the drive and the console. We test the drive on your console, so pairing is checked as part of the repair.

Most common faults:

  • Drive not detected after clipping it on
  • 'Cannot read disc' errors
  • Grinding or slow loading
  • Second-hand drive refusing to pair
↓ See PS5 Slim prices

PS5 Pro add-on drive (CFI-7000 & 7100 series)

No drive in the box · uses the detachable add-on drive

The Pro comes without a disc drive, and owners who want physical games add the same detachable drive used on the Digital Slim. Its faults are the same as the Slim's: detection and pairing problems, read errors and a worn mechanism. Because the drive and the console are both newer, check whether they're still under warranty first. Out of warranty, we test the drive on your console and quote in writing after a free diagnostic.

Most common faults:

  • Add-on drive not detected
  • Drive won't pair with the console
  • Read errors on new discs

PS5 disc drive faults — what's happening and how we fix it

Can't read disc, or error CE-100005-6

Error CE-100005-6 means the console can't read the disc. Start with the disc: wipe it from the centre outwards with a soft cloth and try a different disc. If other discs work, the first disc is the problem. If no disc works, restart in safe mode (hold the power button until the second beep) and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database — it fixes some read errors caused by software.

If it still won't read anything, the laser is usually worn or dirty inside. Laser replacement from R1,850 · drive repair from R1,200.

Disc stuck and won't eject

Press the eject button once and wait. If nothing happens, shut the console down fully and try again, then try ejecting from the game's menu on the home screen. Don't pry the disc out with anything — it scratches the disc and can damage the loading mechanism.

A disc that won't come out usually means the loading mechanism has jammed or its motor has failed. We get the disc out safely, usually undamaged, and repair the mechanism. Drive repair from R1,200.

Grinding, clicking or loud noises

Some spinning noise is normal while a game installs. Grinding, scraping, rattling or repeated clicking is not. It usually means a worn mechanism, a loose part inside the drive, or a disc that's warped or cracked. Stop using the disc straight away, because a damaged drive can scratch it badly.

We open the drive, find the worn or loose part and repair it, then test it with several discs. Drive repair from R1,200.

Won't take a disc in, or spits it straight back out

If the drive won't pull a disc in, or pulls it in and ejects it straight away, the loading mechanism or its sensor isn't working properly. Try a different disc first — a warped or sticky disc can cause the same thing. If every disc is rejected, the mechanism needs repairing. Drive repair from R1,200.

PS5 Slim or Pro drive not detected

The detachable drive needs to be clipped on firmly and, the first time it's connected, the console must be online to pair with it. Check both, then restart the console. A drive bought second-hand or moved from another console may need to pair again before it works.

If the console still doesn't see the drive, the fault is the drive's connector, its board or the console's port. We test the drive on your console and on ours to find which. Slim drive repair from R1,200 · Pro add-on drive quoted after a free diagnostic.

Only some discs fail

When a laser starts to weaken, the discs that need the most from it fail first. That's usually 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray films, then large PS5 games, while DVDs and older discs still work. If that's the pattern you're seeing, and the discs themselves are clean and unscratched, the laser is on its way out. Laser replacement from R1,850.

Before you bring your PS5 in

  1. Try another disc first. If other discs work, it's the disc, not the drive.
  2. Don't pry out a stuck disc. Bring the console in with the disc still inside.
  3. Bring a disc that fails, so we can test with it.
  4. For a Slim or Pro, bring the drive and the console. The drive is paired to your console, so we test them together.
  5. Your games and saves stay on the console. A drive repair doesn't touch the SSD.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A short video of the noise or the error on screen, plus the CFI- number from the label, is usually enough for us to give you a starting price on WhatsApp.

PS5 disc drive repair — frequently asked questions

How much does a PS5 disc drive repair cost?

Disc drive repair starts from R1,200 and laser replacement from R1,850 on the PS5 original and PS5 Slim. PS5 Pro add-on drive repairs are quoted after a free diagnostic. You get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

What does error CE-100005-6 mean?

It means the PS5 can't read the disc. Clean the disc and try another one first. If no disc works, try Clear Cache and Rebuild Database in safe mode. If it still fails, the laser or drive needs repairing.

My disc is stuck in my PS5. Can you get it out?

Yes. Don't try to pry it out. We remove it safely, usually without damaging it, and repair the loading mechanism so it doesn't happen again.

Is it the laser or the mechanism?

If discs go in and out normally but won't play, it's usually the laser. If discs won't go in, won't come out or the drive grinds, it's usually the mechanism. We test both before quoting.

Can you fix the PS5 Slim's detachable drive?

Yes. We repair Slim drive mechanisms and lasers, and check that the drive pairs with your console. Bring the drive and the console together.

Can you add a disc drive to my PS5 Digital Edition?

On the original PS5, no — the Digital Edition doesn't have the parts for a drive. The Digital Slim and the Pro can use Sony's add-on disc drive, which simply clips on.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. A disc drive repair doesn't touch the SSD, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are. Disc games still need their disc in the drive to play.

How long does a PS5 disc drive repair take?

Most PS5 repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including testing with several discs. If a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you upfront.

Is there a warranty on PS5 disc drive repairs?

Yes. Every PS5 repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.

Can you collect my PS5?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
