PS5 Overheating Repair Johannesburg
PS5 Overheating Repair Johannesburg
The fan sounds like a hairdryer from the moment the game loads, the console feels hot to the touch, or it switches itself off halfway through a match. That's a PS5 that can't get rid of its heat. Usually it's dust packed into the heatsink and fan, and sometimes the liquid metal between the processor and heatsink has dried out or moved. A full service — strip-down, clean, fresh liquid metal and a soak test — brings most PS5s back to quiet and cool, for a fraction of the price of a new console.

PS5 overheating by model
PS5 original (CFI-1000, 1100 & 1200)
One large intake fan · liquid metal · two dust catchers under the side cover
The original PS5 pulls air in through the front and sides with one large fan and pushes it out through a big heatsink at the back. After a few years in a South African lounge, that heatsink fills with dust and pet hair, the fan spins harder to compensate, and the console gets loud. Later revisions (CFI-1100 and CFI-1200) use a smaller, lighter heatsink, so dust affects them sooner. Vacuuming the two dust catchers under the side cover helps, but the heatsink fins can only be cleaned properly with the console stripped down.
Most common faults:
- Fan loud from the first minute of a game
- Shutting down in demanding games
- Heatsink packed with dust after a few years
- Rattling fan on older consoles
PS5 Slim (CFI-2000 series)
Smaller case · liquid metal · denser cooling
The Slim fits the same hardware into a smaller case, so there's less room for air to move and less margin when the vents get blocked. It's also the PS5 most often tucked into a TV cabinet, which makes things worse. The fix is the same as on the original: a full strip-down, a proper clean of the fan and heatsink, fresh liquid metal and a soak test — plus moving it somewhere with space around the vents.
Most common faults:
- Running hot and loud inside a cabinet
- Fan noise rising over time
- Shutdowns in long gaming sessions
PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 & 7100 series)
More powerful GPU · more heat · newest model
The Pro's bigger graphics chip makes more heat than the other models, so it's the most sensitive to blocked vents and a clogged heatsink. It's new enough that many are still under Sony's warranty, so check that first — opening it for a service ends the warranty. Out of warranty, the Pro gets the same full service as the other models at the same price, and a fan that's failed is quoted after a free diagnostic.
Most common faults:
- Fan noise under heavy load
- Heat when boxed in or on carpet
- Fan faults after a knock or a drop
PS5 overheating — what's happening and how we fix it
Fan loud all the time
A PS5 should be close to silent in menus and only moderately audible in demanding games. If the fan roars as soon as a game loads, the console is working hard to move heat through a heatsink that's blocked with dust or sitting in a space with no airflow. First check where it lives: leave at least 10 cm of space around it, keep it out of closed cabinets and off the carpet, and keep the vents clear.
If it's still loud with plenty of space around it, the heatsink needs cleaning from the inside. Full service with liquid metal from R1,500.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Switches off mid-game, or a 'too hot' warning
When the PS5 gets too hot it warns you and then shuts itself off to protect the processor. If that's happening, the cooling can't keep up. Let it cool down completely, move it somewhere open, and clean the vents. If it shuts down again in the same games, it needs a full service — and the sooner the better, because running hot for months stresses the board.
We strip the console down, clean the fan and heatsink, re-apply the liquid metal and run a game under load before it goes back. From R1,500.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Dust and pet hair in the vents
With the console switched off and unplugged, you can vacuum the vents gently, and on the original PS5 you can lift off the side cover and vacuum the two dust catchers. Hold the fan still if you use compressed air, so it doesn't overspin, and never poke anything into the fan.
That clears the surface, but most of the dust sits inside the heatsink fins, which you can't reach without a full strip-down. If the noise comes back within days, that's where the problem is. Full service from R1,500.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Still hot after cleaning — heatsink and liquid metal
Sony uses liquid metal, not paste, between the PS5's processor and its heatsink. It moves heat brilliantly, but over years of heat cycles it can dry out or shift, and the processor then runs hot even with a clean heatsink. Liquid metal conducts electricity, so it has to be cleaned off and re-applied carefully, with the original seal intact so nothing can reach nearby components.
This is the part of the service that makes the biggest difference on older consoles, and it's included in every full service. Full service with liquid metal from R1,500.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Fan rattling, grinding or not spinning
A rattle, a grinding noise, or a fan that doesn't spin at all usually means the fan's bearing is worn or a blade is damaged, often after the console was knocked or something got into the vents. A cleaning service won't fix a damaged fan. We test it during the free diagnostic, and if it needs replacing we fit a new fan as part of the service.
Fan replacement quoted after a free diagnostic.

If the PS5 switches off straight after it starts, shows a white light and dies, or crashes in rest mode, it's usually a power fault, not heat. See PS5 power faults. A high-pitched buzz or whine that changes with what's on screen is coil whine from the power components. It's common, isn't caused by heat and isn't a sign of damage. The diagnostic is free either way.

- Give it space first. At least 10 cm around the console, out of closed cabinets and off the carpet.
- Vacuum the vents with the console unplugged. If it's still loud, the dust is inside.
- Note when it happens — which game, how long into a session, and whether it shows a warning.
- Your games and saves stay on the console. A service doesn't touch the SSD.
- Check the warranty on a PS5 Pro before booking, because opening it ends Sony's warranty.
A short video with the fan noise, plus the CFI- number from the label, is usually enough for us to tell you on WhatsApp whether it needs a service.

Common questionsPS5 overheating repair — frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fix an overheating PS5?
A full service with liquid metal re-application starts from R1,500 on the PS5 original, Slim and Pro. If the fan is damaged, fan replacement is quoted after a free diagnostic. You get the exact price in writing before any work starts.
Why is my PS5 so loud?
Usually because dust has built up inside the heatsink and fan, or the console is in a space without enough airflow. The fan spins faster to compensate. Giving it space and vacuuming the vents helps; if it's still loud, it needs a full service.
Why does my PS5 turn off by itself?
If it happens during games, and especially with a 'too hot' warning, it's overheating. If it switches off even when cool, or as soon as you turn it on, it's more likely a power fault, which we diagnose for free.
Can I clean my PS5 myself?
You can vacuum the vents, and on the original PS5 the two dust catchers under the side cover. Most of the dust sits inside the heatsink fins, though, and that needs a full strip-down, which is part of our service.
Is it safe to replace PS5 liquid metal?
Yes, when it's done properly. Liquid metal is electrically conductive, so we clean off the old compound, re-apply the right amount and keep the original seal intact so nothing can reach nearby components. Every console is then load-tested before it goes back.
Should my PS5 stand vertically or lie flat?
Either works, as long as there's space around the vents. What matters most is at least 10 cm of space, no closed cabinet, and not standing it on carpet or a rug.
Will I lose my games and saves?
No. A service doesn't touch the SSD, so your games, saves and settings stay exactly as they are.
How long does a PS5 overheating repair take?
Most PS5 repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test with a game running. If a fan has to be ordered, we'll tell you upfront.
Is there a warranty on PS5 overheating repairs?
Yes. Every PS5 service and repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.
Can you collect my PS5?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
