PS5 Power Supply Repair Johannesburg
PS5 Power Supply Repair Johannesburg
You press the button and nothing happens. No light, no beep — or it beeps, lights up for a second and dies. In South Africa the usual story is the same: the power went off during load shedding or a storm, and when it came back the PS5 didn't. Most of the time the internal power supply has taken the hit and the rest of the console is fine. When it isn't, the fault is a power chip or the southbridge on the board. We test each stage in turn, replace only what's failed, and soak-test the console before it goes back to you.

PS5 power faults by model
PS5 original (CFI-1000, 1100 & 1200)
Internal power supply · figure-8 power cable · disc and Digital Edition
The original PS5 has its power supply built in, fed by a simple two-pin figure-8 cable. When a surge comes down the mains, the supply is the first thing in its path, and it often sacrifices itself and leaves the rest of the console untouched. The different revisions use different supply units, so we fit the one that matches your console. If the supply tests fine, we move on to the power-management chips and the southbridge on the board.
Most common faults:
- Dead after load shedding or a storm
- No light and no beep at all
- Beeps, then switches straight off
- Crashes going into rest mode
PS5 Slim (CFI-2000 series)
Smaller internal power supply · figure-8 power cable
The Slim has a smaller internal supply in a tighter case, but it fails in exactly the same ways: a surge takes it out, or it starts cutting out under load before it dies completely. The repair is the same as on the original — test the supply, replace it if it's failed, and check the board's power circuits before the console goes back together.
Most common faults:
- Dead after a surge
- Switching off under load
- Not waking from rest mode
PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 & 7100 series)
Higher-power internal supply · newest model
The Pro needs more power than the other models and uses its own supply. It's new enough that many are still under Sony's warranty — check that first, although surge damage is often treated as accidental. Out of warranty, power supply replacement starts from R2,500. Board-level power faults on the Pro are quoted in writing after a free diagnostic, because its parts are newer and pricier.
Most common faults:
- Dead after a surge
- No light, no beep
- Switching off under heavy load
PS5 power faults — what's happening and how we fix it
Completely dead — no light, no beep
Start with the simple things. Try another figure-8 power cable and another wall socket, plugged in directly rather than through an adapter or multiplug. Leave the console unplugged for a few minutes, then try the power button again. Faulty cables and tripped multiplugs cause more 'dead PS5s' than you'd think.
If there's still nothing, the internal power supply is the most likely cause. We test its output on the bench before quoting, so you know it's the supply and not the board. Power supply from R2,450 (Pro from R2,500).

When the power comes back after load shedding, or lightning hits the grid, there's often a spike. The PS5's power supply sits first in line and usually takes the damage. Stop trying to switch it on once it's dead — repeated attempts with a damaged supply can spread the damage to the board.
In most cases replacing the supply brings it back. If the surge got further, we test the power IC and the southbridge too, and quote for everything before any work starts. Power supply from R2,450 · power IC from R2,600 · southbridge from R3,500.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Beeps, the light comes on, then it switches off
If the PS5 beeps and the light comes on for a moment before it dies, power is reaching the board but something stops it starting properly. It can be a supply that collapses as soon as the console draws more power, a failed power IC, or a southbridge fault. If it only switches off during games after it's been running a while, it's much more likely heat — see PS5 overheating repair.
We test the supply under load and then the board's power stages, so you only pay for the part that's failed. From R2,450.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Crashes in rest mode, or won't wake up
A PS5 that crashes while going into rest mode, or sits with an orange light and won't wake, often has an early power-supply or southbridge fault. As a first test, switch rest mode off for a few days (Settings → System → Power Saving) and shut the console down fully instead. If it behaves normally that way but crashes in rest mode, bring it in before it fails completely. Power supply from R2,450 · southbridge from R3,500.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Burning smell, a crackle or a pop
Unplug the console from the wall straight away and don't try it again. A pop or a burning smell usually means a component in the power supply has failed. Don't open the console to look: the supply holds mains voltage, and it can stay charged after it's unplugged.
We open it safely, check whether the damage stopped at the supply, and quote in writing. Power supply from R2,450.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Power supply tests fine, but it still won't start
If the supply delivers the right voltages and the PS5 still won't start, the fault is on the board. The two usual suspects are a power-management IC and the southbridge, the chip that handles power-on, the USB ports and rest mode. Both are micro-soldering repairs done under the microscope. Power IC from R2,600 · southbridge from R3,500 on the original and Slim · PS5 Pro quoted after a free diagnostic.

- Try another power cable and socket first, plugged straight into the wall.
- After a surge, stop pressing the button. Repeated attempts can turn a power-supply repair into a board repair.
- Don't open it. The power supply holds mains voltage even when unplugged.
- Tell us what happened — load shedding, a storm, a pop, or a slow decline.
- Your games and saves stay on the console. A power repair doesn't touch the SSD.
A line about what happened when it died, plus the CFI- number from the label, is usually enough for us to give you a starting price on WhatsApp.

1. Free diagnostic
We test the power supply's output on the bench, then the board's power stages, and find exactly which part has failed before quoting.

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

Common questionsPS5 power supply repair — frequently asked questions
How much does a PS5 power supply repair cost?
Power supply replacement starts from R2,450 on the PS5 original and Slim, and from R2,500 on the PS5 Pro. If the fault is on the board, a power IC starts from R2,600 and a southbridge from R3,500. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts.
My PS5 won't turn on after load shedding. Can it be fixed?
Usually, yes. The surge when the power comes back most often damages the internal power supply and leaves the rest of the console untouched. Stop trying to switch it on, and bring it in for a free diagnostic.
How do I know if it's the power supply or the board?
We test the supply's output on the bench. If it's delivering the right voltages and the console still won't start, the fault is on the board — usually a power IC or the southbridge. You only pay for the part that has actually failed.
My PS5 beeps and then turns off. What's wrong?
Power is reaching the board, but something stops it starting properly — a weak power supply, a power IC or the southbridge. If it only switches off during games after a while, it's more likely overheating.
Can a bad power cable stop my PS5 turning on?
Yes. The PS5 uses a figure-8 cable, and a damaged one, a loose plug or a tripped multiplug can all look like a dead console. Always try another cable and socket first.
How do I protect my PS5 from load shedding?
Plug it into a good surge protector, switch it off at the wall before scheduled load shedding, and wait a few minutes after the power returns before switching it back on. A UPS rated for consoles gives the best protection.
Will I lose my games and saves?
No. A power supply, power IC or southbridge repair doesn't touch the SSD, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are.
How long does a PS5 power repair take?
Most PS5 repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test with a game running. Board-level repairs can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.
Is there a warranty on PS5 power repairs?
Yes. Every PS5 repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.
Can you collect my PS5?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
