PS4 Power Supply Repair Johannesburg

PS4 Power Supply Repair Johannesburg

You press the button and nothing happens — or the PS4 beeps once, the light flickers, and it switches straight off. Most of the time it happened the moment the power came back after load shedding or a storm. The internal power supply usually takes the hit and the rest of the console is fine. When it isn't, the fault is a power chip or the southbridge on the board. We test each stage, replace only what's failed, and soak-test the console before it goes back to you.

PS4 power faults by model

PS4 original (CUH-1000, 1100 & 1200)

Internal power supply · figure-8 power cable · touch-sensitive power button on early models

The original PS4 has its power supply built in, fed by a two-pin figure-8 cable, and after ten years or more many supplies are simply tired. A surge finishes them off. The first two revisions (CUH-1000 and 1100) also have a touch-sensitive power button, so a console that won't respond can occasionally be the button or its ribbon rather than the power supply — we check that first, because it's a much smaller repair.

Most common faults:

  • Dead after load shedding or a storm
  • One beep, then switches off
  • Touch power button not responding (CUH-1000 / 1100)
  • Crashes going into rest mode
↓ See PS4 original prices

PS4 Slim (CUH-2000, 2100 & 2200)

Smaller internal power supply · figure-8 power cable

The Slim has a smaller internal supply in a tighter case, but it fails in the same ways: a surge takes it out, or it starts cutting out under load before it dies completely. We test the supply on the bench, replace it if it's failed, and check the board's power circuits before the console goes back together.

Most common faults:

  • Dead after a surge
  • Switching off a few seconds after starting
  • Not waking from rest mode
↓ See PS4 Slim prices

PS4 Pro (CUH-7000, 7100 & 7200)

Bigger, higher-power supply · runs hot

The Pro draws more power than the other PS4s and uses a bigger supply, which is why its power supply replacement costs more. Years of running hot with a clogged heatsink also stress the supply, so a Pro that has always been loud is more likely to have a tired one. If the supply tests fine, its power IC and southbridge repairs are priced like the other models.

Most common faults:

  • Dead after a surge
  • Switching off under load
  • Power faults after years of running hot

PS4 power faults — what's happening and how we fix it

Completely dead — no light, no beep

Start with the simple things. Try another figure-8 power cable and another wall socket, plugged in directly rather than through an adapter or multiplug. Leave the console unplugged for a few minutes, then try again. Faulty cables and tripped multiplugs cause more 'dead PS4s' than you'd think.

If there's still nothing, the internal power supply is the most likely cause. We test its output on the bench before quoting, so you know it's the supply and not the board. Power supply from R1,800 (Pro R2,800).

Died during load shedding, a storm or a power surge

When the power comes back after load shedding, or lightning hits the grid, there's often a spike. The PS4's power supply sits first in line and usually takes the damage. Stop trying to switch it on once it's dead — repeated attempts with a damaged supply can spread the damage to the board.

In most cases replacing the supply brings it back. If the surge got further, we test the power IC and the southbridge too, and quote for everything before any work starts. Power supply from R1,800 (Pro R2,800) · power IC from R2,000 · southbridge from R2,800.

One beep, the light flickers, then it switches off

If the PS4 beeps once and dies a few seconds later, power is reaching the board but something stops it starting. It can be a power supply that collapses as soon as the console draws more power, a failed power IC, or a southbridge fault. If the light keeps pulsing blue and there's no picture, that's a different symptom — see PS4 blue light repair.

We test the supply under load and then the board's power stages, so you only pay for the part that's failed. From R1,800.

Crashes in rest mode, or the orange light won't wake up

A PS4 that crashes going into rest mode, or sits with an orange light and won't wake, often has an early power-supply or southbridge fault. As a first test, stop using rest mode for a few days (Settings → Power Save Settings) and turn the console off fully instead. If it behaves normally that way but crashes in rest mode, bring it in before it fails completely. Power supply from R1,800 · southbridge from R2,800.

Burning smell, a crackle or a pop

Unplug the console from the wall straight away and don't try it again. A pop or a burning smell usually means a component in the power supply has failed. Don't open the console to look: the supply holds mains voltage, and it can stay charged after it's unplugged.

We open it safely, check whether the damage stopped at the supply, and quote in writing. Power supply from R1,800 (Pro R2,800).

Power supply tests fine, but it still won't start

If the supply delivers the right voltages and the PS4 still won't start, the fault is on the board. The usual suspects are a power-management IC and the southbridge, the chip that handles power-on, the USB ports and rest mode. Both are micro-soldering repairs done under the microscope. Before you bring your PS4 in

  1. Try another power cable and socket first, plugged straight into the wall.
  2. After a surge, stop pressing the button. Repeated attempts can turn a power-supply repair into a board repair.
  3. Don't open it. The power supply holds mains voltage even when unplugged.
  4. Tell us what happened — load shedding, a storm, a pop, or a slow decline.
  5. Your games and saves stay on the console. A power repair doesn't touch the hard drive.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A line about what happened when it died, plus the CUH- number from the sticker, is usually enough for us to give you a starting price on WhatsApp.

How a PS4 power repair works at iAssist

1. Free diagnostic

We test the power supply's output on the bench, then the board's power stages, and find exactly which part has failed before quoting.

2. Written quote

You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.

3. Component-level repair

We replace the failed port, chip or module under a microscope rather than swapping the whole motherboard — which is why it costs a fraction of a new console.

4. Soak-tested before hand-over

Every repaired PS4 runs a game under load and goes in and out of rest mode before it goes back to you, with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

PS4 power supply repair — frequently asked questions

How much does a PS4 power supply repair cost?

Power supply replacement starts from R1,800 on the PS4 original and Slim, and from R2,800 on the PS4 Pro. If the fault is on the board, a power IC starts from R2,200 (R2,000 on the Pro) and a southbridge from R2,800. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts.

My PS4 won't turn on after load shedding. Can it be fixed?

Usually, yes. The surge when the power comes back most often damages the internal power supply and leaves the rest of the console untouched. Stop trying to switch it on, and bring it in for a free diagnostic.

Why does my PS4 beep once and turn off?

Power is reaching the board, but something stops it starting — usually a weak power supply, a power IC or the southbridge. We test each stage on the bench to find which.

Why is the PS4 Pro power supply more expensive?

The Pro draws more power than the other PS4s, so it uses a bigger, more expensive supply.

Can a bad power cable stop my PS4 turning on?

Yes. The PS4 uses a figure-8 cable, and a damaged one, a loose plug or a tripped multiplug can all look like a dead console. Always try another cable and socket first.

How do I protect my PS4 from load shedding?

Plug it into a good surge protector, switch it off at the wall before scheduled load shedding, and wait a few minutes after the power returns before switching it back on.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. A power supply, power IC or southbridge repair doesn't touch the hard drive, so your games, saves and settings stay as they are.

Is it worth repairing an old PS4's power supply?

Usually, yes. A power supply repair costs a fraction of a replacement console, and you keep your games and saves. If the console has other problems that make it not worth it, we'll tell you before you spend anything.

How long does a PS4 power repair take?

Most PS4 repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test with a game running. Board-level repairs can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Can you collect my PS4?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
