PS4 Blue Light Repair Johannesburg

PS4 Blue Light of Death Repair Johannesburg

You press the power button, the light pulses blue, and that's it — it never turns white, the TV stays black, and sometimes the console switches itself off. That's the PS4 "blue light of death". It's a symptom, not a single fault: the cause can be the HDMI port, the HDMI chip, the hard drive, the power supply or the main processor. Guessing gets expensive, so we find the actual failed part on the bench first, quote you in writing, and only fix what's broken.

PS4 blue light by model

PS4 original (CUH-1000, 1100 & 1200)

Launched 2013 · light strip on top · hard drive under the glossy cover

On the original PS4 the light strip across the top is the one that pulses blue. These consoles are now more than ten years old, so the hard drive is the first suspect: a worn drive can stop the console from finishing its start-up, and the drive bay under the glossy cover can work loose if the console has been moved around a lot. Ageing power supplies are the second suspect. The HDMI port is a less common cause on the original than on the Slim, but we test it every time.

Most common faults:

  • Worn or loose hard drive — blue light, then safe mode or nothing
  • Power supply failing after years of use
  • HDMI port damage from cable strain
  • Main processor fault on heavily used consoles
↓ See PS4 original prices

PS4 Slim (CUH-2000, 2100 & 2200)

Launched 2016 · small light on the front edge · HDMI port soldered to the board

On the Slim, a pulsing blue light with no picture is most often the HDMI port. The Slim is light enough to carry between rooms, and every time it's moved with the cable still in, the port takes the strain. If the port looks perfect, the HDMI chip behind it is the next suspect — especially after load shedding. Because the console itself is often fine, a Slim with the blue light is one of the most rewarding repairs we do.

Most common faults:

  • HDMI port damaged by carrying the console with the cable in
  • HDMI chip failure after a power surge
  • Hard drive failure after an interrupted update
  • Power supply after a surge
↓ See PS4 Slim prices

PS4 Pro (CUH-7000, 7100 & 7200)

Launched 2016 · 4K output · biggest power supply of any PS4

The Pro works harder and runs hotter than any other PS4, and years of heat take a toll. A Pro with the blue light can be an HDMI port or HDMI chip fault, like the Slim, but it's also the model where we most often find the main processor has failed after years of running hot with a clogged heatsink. Its bigger power supply is also a common failure after a surge, which is why Pro power repairs cost more.

Most common faults:

  • HDMI port or HDMI chip — blue light, no picture
  • Power supply failure after a surge
  • Main processor fault after years of overheating
  • Hard drive failure

What causes the PS4 blue light — and how each one is fixed

Blue light and no picture — HDMI port or HDMI chip

If the console seems to start (you may hear the fan, or the controller lights up) but the TV shows nothing, start with the simple checks: another HDMI cable, another TV input, and safe mode. Switch the console off, hold the power button until the second beep (about 7 seconds), connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. If safe mode shows a picture, choose 'Change Resolution' — a setting the TV can't display looks exactly like a hardware fault.

Still nothing? Shine a torch into the console's HDMI port. Bent or flattened pins mean the port needs replacing. If the port looks perfect, the HDMI chip behind it is the usual cause, especially after a surge. Port from R1,200 (original & Slim) or R1,400 (Pro) · chip from R1,500 (Slim) or R1,800 (Pro).

Blue light after an update, a crash or a power cut

If the power went off during an update, or the console froze and was switched off at the wall, the system software or the hard drive itself may be damaged. Try safe mode first: 'Rebuild Database' (option 5) sorts out many start-up problems and keeps your games and saves. 'Update System Software' can reinstall the latest firmware from a USB stick without wiping anything.

If safe mode loops, or you see 'Cannot start the PS4. Cannot access system storage', the hard drive is usually worn out. We replace it and reinstall the system software. 1TB hard drive from R1,800. It's also the moment to upgrade to an SSD, which makes the whole console feel faster.

Blue light for a few seconds, then it switches off

A light that pulses blue and then goes out, sometimes with a single beep, usually means the console can't get stable power. The internal power supply is the most common cause, and a quick sign is a console that sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't. Power supply from R1,800 (original & Slim) or R2,800 (Pro).

If the power supply tests fine, the fault moves to the board: the power-management chips or the main processor. We measure each rail on the bench before quoting, so you never pay for a power supply that wasn't the problem.

Blue light after load shedding, a storm or a faulty plug

A surge when the power comes back can take out two parts in particular: the power supply and the HDMI chip. The power supply usually leaves you with no lights at all or the blue-then-off pattern; the HDMI chip leaves the console running with a black screen. After a surge, stop trying to switch the console on — repeated attempts can turn a power-supply repair into a board repair.

We test both on the bench and quote you for what's actually failed. A surge protector or small UPS is the cheapest way to stop it happening again. Power supply from R1,800 · HDMI chip from R1,500.

Blue light after the console was opened or cleaned

If the blue light started straight after a DIY clean or a repair somewhere else, it's usually something that didn't go back properly: the hard drive not fully seated, a ribbon cable for the power button or Wi-Fi not clicked in, or the heatsink not seated on the processor. These are often quick fixes once the console is on the bench.

Blue light and nothing helps — the main processor (APU)

When the HDMI output, the hard drive and the power supply all test fine, the fault is usually the APU — the main processor that combines the CPU and graphics. Years of heat can crack the tiny solder balls underneath it or kill the chip itself. It's most common on the PS4 Pro and on original PS4s that ran hot for years.

We'll be straight with you: an APU repair is specialised board work, and on an older PS4 it's not always worth the money. We quote in writing after the free diagnostic and tell you if a replacement console makes more sense. If you decline, you pay nothing.

Before you bring your PS4 in

  1. Try safe mode first. Hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, then try 'Change Resolution' or 'Rebuild Database'.
  2. Try another HDMI cable and TV input. A faulty cable can look exactly like a blue-light fault.
  3. After a surge, stop switching it on. Repeated attempts can make the damage worse.
  4. Tell us what happened just before — an update, a power cut, a move, or a DIY clean. It points us to the right part.
  5. Back up if safe mode works. Copy saves to a USB stick, or check they're in PlayStation Plus cloud storage, before any hard drive repair.
Not sure what's wrong? Send us a photo.

A short video of the light when you press the power button, plus the CUH- number from the sticker and a line about what happened before it started, is usually enough for a likely cause and starting price on WhatsApp.

PS4 blue light of death — frequently asked questions

What is the PS4 blue light of death?

It's when the PS4's light keeps pulsing blue and never turns solid white, usually with no picture on the TV, and sometimes the console switches off. It's a symptom rather than a single fault: the HDMI port, the HDMI chip, the hard drive, the power supply or the main processor can all cause it.

How much does it cost to fix the PS4 blue light?

It depends on the cause. HDMI port replacement starts from R1,200 (R1,400 on the Pro), the HDMI chip from R1,500 on the Slim and R1,800 on the Pro, a 1TB hard drive from R1,800 and a power supply from R1,800 (R2,800 on the Pro). Main processor faults are quoted after diagnosis. The diagnostic is free and you get the exact price in writing first.

Can I fix the blue light myself?

Sometimes. Try another HDMI cable and TV input, then safe mode: hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB and try 'Change Resolution' or 'Rebuild Database'. If none of that works, the fault is hardware and needs a diagnosis.

Does a pulsing blue light always mean the HDMI port?

No. It's the most common cause on the PS4 Slim, but on the original PS4 the hard drive and power supply are just as likely, and on the PS4 Pro the main processor can be the cause. That's why we test everything before quoting rather than guessing.

Will I lose my games and saves?

Not from an HDMI or power supply repair, because those don't touch the hard drive. If the hard drive has failed, the data on it may not be recoverable, so we warn you first. PlayStation Plus saves are already in the cloud, and if safe mode works you can back up to a USB stick.

My PS4 went blue light after load shedding. What broke?

Usually the power supply or the HDMI chip. A dead or blue-then-off console points to the power supply; a console that runs but shows no picture points to the HDMI chip. Stop switching it on and bring it in for a free diagnostic.

Is it worth fixing a PS4 with the blue light?

In most cases, yes. HDMI, hard drive and power supply repairs cost a fraction of another console, and you keep your saves and settings. If the main processor has failed and the repair isn't worth it, we tell you before you spend anything.

How long does a PS4 blue light repair take?

Most PS4 repairs are done within 3–5 working days after you approve the quote, including a soak test with a game running. Board-level faults can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Is there a warranty on PS4 blue light repairs?

Yes. Every PS4 repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.

Can you collect my PS4?

Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy anywhere else in South Africa. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
