Console out of warranty? We fix what Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo charge a fortune for
Manufacturer service is expensive and slow — independent repair is faster and cheaper
Once your console is out of its 1-year warranty, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo's repair quotes are designed to push you toward buying a new one. A PS5 HDMI port replacement quoted by Sony often exceeds R3,500. Microsoft typically offers replacement consoles rather than component-level repair. Nintendo charges premium pricing for Joy-Con drift fixes and disc drive faults.
We perform every console repair at component level — replacing the failed part, not the whole machine. Most repairs cost a fraction of manufacturer service, are completed within 24–48 hours, and come with a 6-month warranty that often outlasts the original manufacturer warranty.
Common console faults we fix
Every fault below is covered by our free diagnostic. Modern consoles use bonded heatsinks, soldered storage, and fragile ribbon connectors — repairs require precision tooling and microsoldering experience. We've worked on hundreds.
No display / black screen
Console powers on but TV shows nothing. Almost always a damaged HDMI port — the most common console repair we see. Soldered to the board, repairable.
Disc drive not reading
Discs ejected, not detected, or grinding noises. Failed laser, worn drive gears, or dirty optics. Common on PS4 / PS4 Pro after 4–6 years of use.
Controller stick drift
Cursor moves on its own, character walks without input. Affects DualSense, DualShock, Xbox controllers, and Joy-Cons. Stick replacement permanent fix.
Overheating & loud fan
Console shuts down mid-game, jet-engine fan noise, hot air. Dust buildup combined with degraded thermal paste or liquid metal. Full thermal service required.
Liquid damage
Spilled drink, water exposure, or moisture damage. Power off immediately. Ultrasonic board cleaning, corrosion removal, component-level recovery.
Won't power on
Dead console, no lights, beep of death, blue or red light of death. Power supply, capacitor, or board-level fault. Component-level diagnosis and repair.
USB / charging port faults
Controllers won't charge, USB port not detecting, broken charging connector on Switch. Port replacement and circuit repair.
Logic board faults
Random freezes, crashes, error codes, GPU artefacts. Component-level microsoldering on PS5 APU, Xbox SoC, and Switch board.
HDMI port failure — the most common console repair we do
Console powers on but no picture? It's almost always the HDMI port
The HDMI port is directly soldered to the console's logic board, and it's one of the most physically stressed components — every time you plug a cable in, unplug it, or accidentally pull the cable at an angle, it puts strain on those tiny solder joints. Eventually, they fail.
Symptoms: console powers on with normal startup sounds, but the TV shows "no signal" or a black screen. Sometimes the picture flickers when the cable is moved. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo charge premium repair fees or push replacement when this happens — but the actual fix is straightforward microsoldering work.
We replace HDMI ports on every console family — PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Switch OLED. Most repairs are completed within 24–48 hours and are dramatically cheaper than a new console or manufacturer service.
Why specialist console repair beats replacement
Modern consoles cost R12,000–R15,000 new. Most faults — HDMI ports, disc drives, fans, controllers, even logic board issues — are repairable for R350–R2,500. That's the difference between throwing a console away and keeping it running for another 3–5 years.
Keep your saves & account
Repair preserves your console with all your installed games, saves, profile, and digital library. Replacement means transferring everything (sometimes losing licences) and starting fresh.
70–90% cheaper than new
A new PS5 is over R12,000. HDMI port repair is R950–R1,500. Stick drift repair is R350. The maths is obvious — we'll show you the saving in writing before any work begins.
Most repairs in 24–48 hours
Stick drift is often same-day. HDMI port and disc drive repairs typically 1–2 business days. Liquid damage and complex board work 2–4 days. Back gaming fast.
We fix what others can't
Liquid metal replacement on PS5, microsoldering on Xbox Series, Joy-Con board-level repair — most SA shops only swap parts. We diagnose at component level and fix the actual fault.
Known console design issues
Joy-Con stick drift (Nintendo Switch)
- The most widespread console design flaw of the past decade
- Affects every Switch and Switch OLED Joy-Con eventually
- Usually appears within 12–18 months of normal use
- Caused by graphite contamination inside the analog stick mechanism
- We replace the failed stick — Hall Effect option available for permanent prevention
- Daily repair for us — most Joy-Cons fixed within 24 hours
PS5 liquid metal degradation
- PS5 uses liquid metal (not paste) between APU and heatsink for cooling
- Can dry out, migrate, or short circuit over time
- Symptoms: extreme heat, jet-engine fan noise, shutdowns mid-game
- Usually appears 2–4 years into ownership, depending on use
- We replace liquid metal safely with proper containment around board components
- Backed by 6-month iAssist warranty

Console repair by platform
Each console family has its own architecture and common failure patterns. Select your console for specific information.
Console repair — frequently asked questions
Do you repair PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch?
Yes — we repair all three major console families and all current generations. PlayStation: PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 Pro, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, PS3. Xbox: Series X, Series S, Xbox One X, One S, Xbox One, Xbox 360. Nintendo: Switch OLED, Switch Lite, Switch (original), and now Switch 2. Plus controllers across all platforms. Most repairs are completed within 24–48 hours.
My console won't display anything on the TV. Is the HDMI port broken?
Almost certainly yes if your console powers on but shows no picture. The HDMI port is the most common console repair we see — it's directly soldered to the logic board and gets damaged when cables are pulled at angles, when the console is moved while plugged in, or simply through years of plugging and unplugging. We perform full HDMI port replacement using microsoldering equipment. Repair is usually completed within 24–48 hours and is dramatically cheaper than a new console.
How much does HDMI port replacement cost?
HDMI port replacement is one of our most common console repairs. Pricing depends on the console: PS5 R950–R1,500, PS4 R750–R1,200, Xbox Series X/S R950–R1,500, Xbox One R750–R1,200, Nintendo Switch / OLED R650–R1,100. We confirm exact pricing in writing after your free diagnostic before any work begins.
My controller has stick drift. Can it be fixed?
Yes — stick drift is fully repairable on every controller type. We replace the analog stick mechanism (or install Hall Effect sticks for permanent prevention on supported controllers). DualSense (PS5), DualShock 4 (PS4), Xbox Series and Xbox One controllers, and Nintendo Joy-Cons are all repairable from R350. Joy-Cons in particular are a daily repair for us — the design flaw means stick drift is virtually guaranteed within 12–18 months. Repair takes 1–2 business days.
My PS5 is loud and shutting down during games. What's wrong?
This is overheating, almost always caused by dust buildup and degraded thermal paste / liquid metal. PS5 in particular uses liquid metal between the APU and heatsink which can dry out or migrate over time, causing extreme heat and shutdowns. We perform full thermal service: deep clean the heatsink and fan, replace the liquid metal or thermal paste, and test under load. Most consoles return to silent, cool operation. Same fix applies to Xbox Series X/S and PS4 Pro overheating.
I spilled something on my console. What should I do?
Power it off immediately and unplug it. Do not try to turn it back on. Do not put it in rice. Bring it to us as soon as possible — the longer liquid sits on the board, the more corrosion develops. We use ultrasonic cleaning at component level to remove liquid and corrosion from the logic board. Recovery rate is around 80% when the console arrives within 48 hours of the spill.
My console disc drive isn't reading discs. Can you fix it?
Yes. Disc drive faults are usually caused by a failed laser, worn drive gears, or dirty optics. We diagnose the exact fault — often a laser replacement or full drive deck swap. Common on PS4 / PS4 Pro (laser deck failures are predictable around year 4–6), PS5 disc drives, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Repair takes 2–3 business days.
How long does a console repair take?
Most console repairs are completed within 24–48 hours. Controller stick drift is often same-day. HDMI port and disc drive repairs typically 1–2 business days. Liquid damage treatment 2–3 business days depending on severity. Logic board chip-level work 2–4 business days. We confirm timing during your free diagnostic and update you throughout.
Do you offer a warranty on console repairs?
Yes — all console repairs at iAssist are covered by a 6-month warranty on both parts and labour. If the same fault recurs within 6 months, we fix it at no charge. The warranty applies to every repair type, from controller stick drift to HDMI port replacement and component-level board work.
Can you collect my console for repair?
Yes. We offer collection and delivery for consoles across Gauteng for R300. Once your console is repaired, we deliver it back to you. WhatsApp us to arrange a collection time — we cover Johannesburg, Pretoria, Centurion, and surrounding areas. For nationwide service we work with The Courier Guy.
Is it worth fixing an older console?
Almost always yes. A new PS5 costs over R12,000. A new Xbox Series X is similar. Even a basic console repair (HDMI port, disc drive, fan service) costs R650–R1,500 and gives you another 3–5 years of use. The only time we recommend against repair is when an older console has multiple major faults or the part is not economically sourceable. We give you an honest assessment during the free diagnostic.
Can you upgrade my PS5 or Xbox storage?
Yes. PS5 supports M.2 NVMe SSD expansion in its dedicated bay — we'll install and configure compatible drives. Xbox Series X/S uses proprietary Seagate expansion cards which we can supply and fit. PS4 and Xbox One internal HDDs can be upgraded to SSDs for significant load-time improvements. WhatsApp us your console and storage size requirement for a quote.

Console Repairs — Frequently Asked Questions
Which gaming consoles do you repair?
We repair all major gaming consoles including PlayStation 5, PS4, and PS4 Pro; Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Xbox One X and One S; Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite. We also repair older generation consoles including PS3 and Xbox 360. If your console is not listed simply WhatsApp us — chances are we can help.
How much does PS5 HDMI port repair cost in South Africa?
PS5 and Xbox HDMI port replacement at iAssist costs between R1,500 and R2,500 depending on the extent of the damage. HDMI port failure is the most common console repair we handle and our technicians perform the micro-soldering required to replace it properly without causing further board damage. All pricing is confirmed after a free diagnostic with a written quote before work begins.
My PS5 or Xbox won't display anything on my TV — what's wrong?
In most cases this is a failed HDMI port — the pins inside the port break from repeated plugging and unplugging or from the console being knocked while connected. It can also be a faulty HDMI IC chip on the motherboard. Our technicians diagnose the exact cause before any work begins so you know precisely what needs fixing and at what cost before we proceed.
Can you fix Joy-Con drift on a Nintendo Switch?
Yes — Joy-Con drift is one of the most common Nintendo Switch repairs we do. It is caused by a worn analog stick that registers movement even when you are not touching it. We replace the analog stick module on both standard Joy-Cons and Switch Lite controllers. Repair costs between R50 and R700 per controller and most are completed the in 48 hours.
My console is overheating and the fans are extremely loud — can you fix it?
Yes — overheating and loud fans on a PS5, Xbox, or older PlayStation or Xbox are almost always caused by dust buildup and dried thermal paste on the processor. We fully disassemble the console, deep clean the internal cooling system, replace the thermal paste with premium compound, and test under load before returning it. This service dramatically reduces temperatures and fan noise and extends the life of your console significantly.
Can you repair a console that won't turn on at all?
Yes — a console with no power is typically caused by a failed power supply, a blown fuse, a damaged power IC on the motherboard, or liquid damage. Our technicians run a full diagnostic to identify the exact fault. In many cases this is a component-level repair that costs far less than a replacement console and your saved games and data remain intact throughout.
Do you repair console disc drives?
Yes — we repair and replace disc drives on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and older generation consoles. Common disc drive faults include the console not reading discs, the drive making grinding or clicking noises, discs getting stuck, or the drive not ejecting at all. We also replace laser lenses on consoles where the drive is otherwise functional but struggling to read discs.
Can you upgrade my console storage or install an SSD?
Yes — we offer SSD upgrades and storage expansion for PS5 and PS4 models as well as Xbox consoles that support internal storage upgrades. Adding a faster or larger SSD dramatically improves load times and gives you more space for your game library. We handle the full installation and data migration so your existing games and saves transfer across seamlessly.
Do you repair consoles with water or liquid damage?
Yes — do not attempt to power on a liquid-damaged console as this causes further short-circuit damage. Bring it in as soon as possible. We disassemble the console, use ultrasonic cleaning to remove corrosion, replace damaged components, and test fully before return. The sooner liquid damage is treated the better the outcome.
What warranty do you offer on console repairs?
ll console repairs at iAssist come with a 6-month warranty on both parts and labour. If the same fault reoccurs within that period we will fix it at no additional charge. You also receive a written fixed-price quote before any work begins so there are no surprises.
How long does a console repair take?
Most common console repairs including HDMI port replacement, Joy-Con drift, fan cleaning, and disc drive repair are completed within 24 to 48 hours. Power supply and motherboard repairs typically take 2 to 3 business days. Complex micro-soldering and liquid damage repairs may take up to 5 business days depending on parts availability. We always give you a clear timeline upfront and keep you updated throughout.
Do you offer collection and delivery for console repairs across South Africa?
Yes — we offer door-to-door collection and delivery across the entire Gauteng province for R300. For customers outside Gauteng we work with The Courier Guy for nationwide collection and delivery. Simply WhatsApp us on 078 742 4769 and we will arrange everything from your door regardless of where in South Africa you are located.
