We fix it ourselves, at the bench in Silvamonte — it never leaves the building. It's a failed charging IC, usually from a non-MFi cable on the 15 or 16: the phone sticks on 1% and sometimes the screen stops responding too. We haven't seen a Pretoria north shop doing this at component level. We replace the IC and EEPROM in-house, 24–72 hours, 6-month warranty.

A shop near Wonderpark Mall said my phone can't be fixed — is that the final word?

Usually not. Most counters around Wonderpark and Sinoville are set up for screens and batteries only, so a board-level fault — charging IC, Face ID, logic board, liquid damage — gets declared unrepairable simply because it's outside what they do. That's component-level work, which is our specialty. Get a second opinion before accepting a write-off.

Do you use genuine Apple parts, or aftermarket — and does it matter for a phone that's going to a parent or grandparent?

We use OEM parts — either pulled from genuine Apple displays and batteries, or new-manufacture OEM-spec — never the bargain-bin aftermarket screens that cause touch lag and colour shift.
