Button-related repairs on iPad fall into two very different categories depending on the generation: Home-button models (most pre-2020 iPads) use a mechanical Touch ID button that can fail from wear or drop damage, while Home-button-free models moved Touch ID into the top or side power button — a smaller, more drop-exposed sensor that fails more often from impact than from age. Neither Touch ID location can simply be swapped between units; each sensor is factory-paired to its own logic board.

Physical damage or flex cable failure. Note: Touch ID will not function on a replacement Home button without Apple's pairing process — we advise on this before repair.
Power button stuck or won't click
Physical damage or mechanism failure. Power button replacement restores normal sleep/wake and shutdown functionality.
Volume buttons not responding
Volume buttons share a flex cable. One or both sides not responding indicates flex cable or button mechanism failure.
Side button Touch ID not working — Air 4+ / Mini 6+
iPads without a Home button have Touch ID in the side power button. A failed side button affects both power control and fingerprint authentication.
Home button feels mushy or stuck
Debris under the button or a degraded button mechanism. Cleaning and mechanism replacement.
Button fell off or physically broken
Physical damage where the button has separated from the frame. Replacement required.
