Xbox Controller Drift Repair Johannesburg
Xbox Controller Drift Repair Johannesburg
Your aim pulls to one side, your character creeps forward, or the menu won't stay put. That's stick drift, and it happens to Xbox controllers just as it does to every other kind. The sensors inside each stick wear a little with every move, until the controller reports movement you're not making. We replace the worn stick for a fraction of the price of a new controller, or fit a Hall Effect stick that uses magnets instead of rubbing contacts, so it doesn't wear out the same way again.

Stick drift by controller
Xbox Series X|S controller (model 1914)
Xbox Wireless Controller · every colour and edition · per-stick repair or Hall Effect upgrade
Each stick reads its position with two small sensors that have a contact wiping across a track. Every move wears that track a little, dust gets in, and eventually the reading wanders when the stick is centred. The stick module is soldered to the controller's main board, so the repair is a proper soldering job: we open the controller, desolder the worn stick, fit a new one, and test it in a game. Special editions and custom shells go back exactly as they came in.
Most common faults:
- Aim pulling to one side in shooters
- Character creeping forward on its own
- Left stick first — it does all the moving
- Stick loose or not clicking in
Xbox One controller (models 1537, 1697 & 1708)
Works on Xbox One, Series X|S and PC · same repair and price
Xbox One controllers also work on a Series X or Series S, so plenty are still in daily use years later — and many of them have drifted by now. The sticks work the same way as the newer controller's and wear out the same way, and the repair and prices are the same. For its other faults, like tired bumpers or a loose micro-USB port, see Xbox One controller repairs.
Most common faults:
- Stick drift on one or both sticks
- Sticks worn smooth or loose
- Drift that comes and goes
Xbox Elite Series 2 (model 1797)
Built differently from the standard controller · quoted after a free check
The Elite Series 2 has swappable thumbstick tops and adjustable stick tension, but the sensors underneath still wear and drift. It's built differently from the standard Xbox controller and parts vary, so every Elite drift repair is checked for free and quoted in writing before any work starts. Check first whether it's still under Microsoft's warranty.
Most common faults:
- Drift on one stick
- Drift that changes with the tension setting
- Stick feels loose even on the tightest setting
Xbox controller drift — what's happening and how we fix it
Aim or camera moves on its own
Check it's really the controller first. Put it down with your thumbs off the sticks and watch the menu or the in-game camera. If you have another controller, try it in the same game. If only one controller does it, that controller is drifting.
Xbox has no stick calibration screen, so the free fixes are limited: update the controller through the Xbox Accessories app, try fresh batteries, and raise the dead zone in games that have the setting. Blowing out dust can help for a few days, but it doesn't fix a worn sensor. If the drift stays, the stick needs replacing. Drift repair from R350 per stick.

Drift usually starts small: the aim pulls only now and then, or only after a long session. As the track inside the stick wears further, it happens more often and the movement gets bigger. That's the sign the stick module itself has worn out, and it won't get better on its own.
We replace the worn stick and test the controller in a game before it goes back. Most drift repairs are done within 1–2 working days. If both sticks are worn, we'll tell you and quote for both. From R350 per stick.

A standard replacement stick works like the original, so with heavy use it can eventually wear the same way. A Hall Effect stick measures its position with magnets and a sensor instead of a contact rubbing on a track, so there's nothing to wear down and drift. It fits inside the standard Xbox controller shell and works with every game, on console and PC.
It's the option we recommend for a controller that's used every day, or one that's already had a drift repair before. Hall Effect upgrade from R650 per stick.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Stick loose, gritty or won't click in
A stick that feels gritty, stiff or wobbly, or doesn't click when you press it down, has the same root cause as drift: wear or damage inside the stick module. Replacing the module fixes the feel, the click and any drift together, so it's the same repair and the same price. From R350 per stick · Hall Effect from R650.

Try the stick at a different tension setting and with a different thumbstick top. If the drift stays, the sensor underneath is worn. Check whether the controller is still under Microsoft's warranty before anyone opens it.
Out of warranty, we check it for free and quote in writing before any work starts. Elite bumpers and the built-in battery are common faults too, so we'll tell you if we spot anything else while it's open.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Only in one game, or the controller keeps disconnecting
If the movement only happens in one game, check that game's controller settings: a very low dead zone can make a healthy stick look like it's drifting. If the controller disconnects or switches off, try fresh AA batteries first — weak batteries cause most Xbox disconnects. If it still drops out, it's a battery contact, wireless or pairing fault, not drift. See pairing and connection faults; the diagnostic is free either way.

- Test it with your thumbs off the sticks. If the aim or menu still moves, it's drift.
- Update and try fresh batteries first. Use the Xbox Accessories app to update the controller.
- Bring just the controller. We test it on our own Xbox, so you don't need to bring the console.
- Leave the battery pack in if you use a rechargeable one, so we can test it the way you use it.
- Tell us if you want the Hall Effect upgrade so we can quote for it at the same time.
A short video of the aim or menu moving with your thumbs off the sticks, plus a line about which stick it is, is usually enough for us to confirm the repair and price on WhatsApp.
How an Xbox controller drift repair works at iAssist
1. Free diagnostic
We test both sticks in a game and on the bench, open the controller, and confirm whether it's the stick module or something else before quoting.
2. Written quote
You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.
3. Stick replacement, not a new controller
We desolder just the worn stick module and fit a new one — standard or Hall Effect — and keep your controller and its shell, which is why it costs a fraction of a new Xbox controller.
4. Game-tested
Every repaired controller is played in a game with the stick centred and at full travel before it goes back to you, with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

Xbox controller drift repair — frequently asked questions
How much does Xbox controller drift repair cost?
Stick drift repair on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One controllers starts from R350 per stick, and a Hall Effect stick upgrade starts from R650 per stick. Elite Series 2 repairs are quoted after a free check.
What causes Xbox controller drift?
Each stick uses sensors with a contact that rubs across a track every time you move it. Over time the track wears and dust gets in, so the stick reports a direction even when it's centred. It's normal wear, sped up by heavy play.
Can I fix Xbox controller drift myself?
Updating the controller in the Xbox Accessories app, trying fresh batteries and raising the dead zone in a game's settings are worth trying first. If the drift stays, the stick module is worn. It's soldered to the controller's board, so replacing it needs proper desoldering tools.
What is a Hall Effect stick?
It's a replacement stick that measures position with magnets and a sensor instead of a contact rubbing on a track. Because nothing rubs, there's nothing to wear down, so it doesn't drift the same way. It fits inside a standard Xbox controller and works with every game.
Is it cheaper to repair or buy a new Xbox controller?
Repairing is usually much cheaper. A drift repair costs a fraction of a new controller, and new controllers use the same kind of stick, so they can drift again too. A Hall Effect upgrade fixes the cause.
Can you fix an Xbox One controller, or only Series controllers?
Both. Xbox One controllers use the same kind of stick and get the same repair at the same price, and they still work on a Series X or Series S afterwards.
Do you repair Elite Series 2 drift?
Yes. Because the Elite is built differently and parts vary, we check it for free and quote in writing first. Check whether it's still under Microsoft's warranty before you bring it in.
Do I need to bring my Xbox?
No. Just bring the controller that drifts. We test every repaired controller on our own console.
How long does an Xbox controller drift repair take?
Most drift repairs are done within 1–2 working days after you approve the quote. If several controllers come in together, or a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you upfront.
Can you collect my controller?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and one collection covers as many controllers as you send. For the rest of South Africa we arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
