PS5 Controller Drift Repair Johannesburg
PS5 Controller Drift Repair Johannesburg
Your character walks off by themselves, the camera slowly turns, or the menu cursor won't sit still. That's stick drift, and it's the reason most DualSense controllers end up in a drawer. The stick sensors inside wear with every move and dust gets in, until the controller reports movement you're not making. We replace the worn stick for a fraction of the price of a new DualSense, or upgrade it to a Hall Effect stick that uses magnets instead of rubbing contacts, so it doesn't wear out the same way again.

Stick drift by controller
DualSense (CFI-ZCT1)
Standard PS5 controller · every colour and edition · per-stick repair or Hall Effect upgrade
Each DualSense stick reads its position with two small sensors that have a contact wiping across a track. Every move wears that track a little, dust works its way in, and eventually the reading wanders when the stick is centred. The stick module is soldered to the controller's main board, so the repair is a proper soldering job: we open the controller, desolder the worn stick, fit a new one, and test it in a game. Special editions and custom shells go back exactly as they came in.
Most common faults:
- Drift to one side, or the camera slowly turning
- Drift that's worse when the controller is warm
- Left stick first — it does all the walking
- Stick loose or not clicking in (L3/R3)
DualSense Edge (CFI-ZCP1)
Removable stick modules · quoted after a free check
The Edge was built with drift in mind: each stick is a module that pops out from the front, and Sony sells replacement modules. So the first fix may simply be a new module, and we'll tell you if that's all you need. If a module isn't available, or the fault is in the controller rather than the module, we assess it for free and quote in writing before any work starts.
Most common faults:
- Drift on one module
- Drift that stays after swapping modules — points to the controller
- Module not detected
PS4 DualShock 4 (CUH-ZCT1 & ZCT2)
Same kind of stick as the DualSense · same repair and price
Most DualShock 4s have years of play behind them now, so drift is very common. The sticks work the same way as the DualSense's and wear out the same way. The repair and the prices are the same too, and a repaired DS4 still works perfectly with a PS4, a PC or a phone. For its other faults, like a loose micro-USB port or a tired battery, see DualShock 4 repairs.
Most common faults:
- Stick drift on one or both sticks
- Sticks worn smooth or loose
- Drift that comes and goes
PS5 controller drift — what's happening and how we fix it
Character or camera moves on its own
Check it's really the controller first. Put the controller down with your thumbs off the sticks and watch the menu cursor or the in-game camera. If you have another controller, try it in the same game. If only one controller does it, that controller is drifting.
The PS5 has no stick calibration screen, so the free fixes are limited: reset the controller with the small button on the back (hold it for about five seconds), connect it with a USB cable and install any controller update the PS5 offers, and raise the stick dead zone in games that have the setting. Blowing out dust can help for a few days, but it doesn't fix a worn sensor. If the drift stays, the stick needs replacing. Drift repair from R350 per stick.

Drift usually starts small: the camera creeps only now and then, or only when the controller is warm. As the track inside the stick wears further, it happens more often and the movement gets bigger. That's the sign the stick module itself has worn out, and it won't get better on its own.
We replace the worn stick and test the controller in a game before it goes back. Most drift repairs are done within 1–2 working days. If both sticks are worn, we'll tell you and quote for both. From R350 per stick.

A standard replacement stick works like the original, so with heavy use it can eventually wear in the same way. A Hall Effect stick measures its position with magnets and a sensor instead of a contact rubbing on a track, so there's nothing to wear down and drift. It fits inside the standard DualSense shell and works with every game.
It's the option we recommend for a controller that's used every day, or one that's already had a drift repair before. Hall Effect upgrade from R650 per stick.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Stick loose, gritty or L3/R3 won't click
A stick that feels gritty, stiff or wobbly, or doesn't click when you press it down (L3 or R3), has the same root cause as drift: wear or damage inside the stick module. Replacing the module fixes the feel, the click and any drift together, so it's the same repair and the same price. From R350 per stick · Hall Effect from R650.

Swap the drifting module with the other one, or with a spare. If the drift moves with the module, the module is worn. If it stays on the same side, the fault is in the controller, not the module. Check whether the Edge is still under Sony's warranty first.
Out of warranty, we check it for free and quote in writing before any work starts — either a replacement module or a repair to the module or the controller, depending on what's available.
Get a quote for this on WhatsApp →Only in one game, or the controller keeps disconnecting
If the movement only happens in one game, check that game's controller settings: a very low dead zone can make a healthy stick look like it's drifting. If the controller disconnects, stops responding or won't pair, that's not drift at all. It's usually the battery, the charging circuit or the wireless connection. See pairing and connection faults; the diagnostic is free either way.

- Test it with your thumbs off the sticks. If the cursor or camera still moves, it's drift.
- Reset and update first. Use the reset button on the back, then connect it by USB and install any controller update.
- Bring just the controller. We test it on our own PS5, so you don't need to bring the console or a cable.
- Check the warranty. If the controller is still under Sony's warranty, use that first, since opening it ends the warranty.
- Tell us if you want the Hall Effect upgrade so we can quote for it at the same time.
A short video of the camera or cursor moving with your thumbs off the sticks, plus a line about which stick it is, is usually enough for us to confirm the repair and price on WhatsApp.
How a DualSense drift repair works at iAssist
1. Free diagnostic
We test both sticks in a game and on the bench, open the controller, and confirm whether it's the stick module, a ribbon cable or something else before quoting.
2. Written quote
You get the fault and the price in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is opened up for repair until you say yes. Decline and you pay nothing.
3. Stick replacement, not a new controller
We desolder just the worn stick module and fit a new one — standard or Hall Effect — and keep your controller, its shell and its battery, which is why it costs a fraction of a new DualSense.
4. Game-tested
Every repaired controller is played in a game with the stick centred and at full travel before it goes back to you, with a 6-month parts-and-labour warranty.

PS5 controller drift repair — frequently asked questions
How much does PS5 controller drift repair cost?
DualSense stick drift repair starts from R350 per stick, and a Hall Effect stick upgrade starts from R650 per stick. DualShock 4 drift repairs cost the same. DualSense Edge repairs are quoted after a free check.
What causes PS5 controller drift?
Each stick uses sensors with a contact that rubs across a track every time you move it. Over time the track wears and dust gets in, so the stick reports a direction even when it's centred. It's normal wear, sped up by heavy play — not something you did wrong.
Can I fix DualSense drift myself?
Resetting the controller, installing controller updates and raising the dead zone in a game's settings are worth trying first. If the drift stays, the stick module is worn. It's soldered to the controller's board, so replacing it needs proper desoldering tools.
What is a Hall Effect stick?
It's a replacement stick that measures position with magnets and a sensor instead of a contact rubbing on a track. Because nothing rubs, there's nothing to wear down, so it doesn't drift the same way. It fits inside the standard DualSense and works with every game.
Is it cheaper to repair or buy a new DualSense?
Repairing is usually much cheaper. A drift repair costs a fraction of a new DualSense, and new controllers use the same kind of stick, so they can drift again too. A Hall Effect upgrade fixes the cause.
Do I need to bring my PS5?
No. Just bring the controller that drifts. We test every repaired controller on our own console.
Can you fix DualSense Edge drift?
Yes. The Edge's stick modules pop out, so the fix may be a new module. If a module isn't available, or the fault is in the controller itself, we check it for free and quote in writing first.
How long does a PS5 controller drift repair take?
Most drift repairs are done within 1–2 working days after you approve the quote. If several controllers come in together, or a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you upfront.
Is there a warranty on controller drift repairs?
Yes. Every controller repair carries a 6-month warranty on parts and labour.
Can you collect my controller?
Yes. We collect and deliver across Gauteng for a flat R300 round trip via Eliz Courier, and one collection covers as many controllers as you send. For the rest of South Africa we arrange insured shipping with The Courier Guy. You can also drop it off at Shop 4, Silvercrest Centre, 11 Swemmer Rd, Silvamonte.
