The original iPad Air was the first Air-branded iPad and, unlike every Air that followed it, does not support any generation of Apple Pencil at all — a detail that catches out a lot of secondhand buyers. Now well over a decade old, the most common issue we see on these units is a battery that has aged past a safe capacity, which we assess for swelling before opening the chassis.

Frequently asked questions — iPad Air 1st gen
How do I identify my iPad Air 1st gen?
The model number is printed in small text on the back of the device. The iPad Air 1st gen uses model numbers A1474 / A1475 / A1476. Go to Settings — General — About — Model Number. Tapping the model number toggles between the marketing name and the technical identifier. Having your model number ready means we can give you an accurate quote immediately.
Is the iPad Air 1st gen display laminated?
Fully laminated — the glass is fused directly to the LCD panel. Glass-only refurbishment is available using our OCA lamination machine — we separate the broken glass and re-laminate new OEM-grade glass onto the original Apple LCD panel, keeping it intact. Full assembly replacement is also available for faster 24-48 hour turnaround.
Can I get a glass-only repair on the iPad Air 1st gen?
Yes. iAssist has a professional OCA lamination machine and bubble removal machine. We remove the broken glass and fit new OEM-grade glass, keeping your original Apple LCD panel intact. If the touch layer has also been damaged, touch replacement is available separately at a higher price but still preserves your original display. Important: very badly shattered glass can sometimes damage the touch during removal — we assess after glass removal and advise you before any extra work. Your LCD panel is never at risk. Takes 3-5 days for the adhesive to cure properly.
Does the iPad Air 1st gen support Apple Pencil?
iPad Air 1st gen does not support Apple Pencil. Pencil support was added to later iPad generations.
Where is Touch ID on the iPad Air 1st gen?
In the Home button at the bottom of the device. Touch ID is cryptographically paired to the Secure Enclave — a replacement Home button will click but fingerprint recognition will not function. We explain this before any Home button repair.
Does the iPad Air 1st gen have Face ID?
No — iPad Air 1st gen uses Home button Touch ID. Face ID was not available on this model.
What charging port does the iPad Air 1st gen use, and is it repairable?
The iPad Air 1st gen uses a Lightning port. The port is soldered to the logic board. Micro-soldering repairs damaged pins or replaces the full port socket — data is preserved and no board replacement needed. Typical cost: R1,000 – R1,400 (micro-soldering).
How long does iPad Air 1st gen repair take at iAssist?
Screen and battery replacements are typically done within 24-48 hours. Glass-only refurbishment takes 3-5 days for the OCA adhesive to cure. Port micro-soldering takes 24-48 hours. Logic board and liquid damage repairs take 2-4 business days. All turnaround times confirmed at booking.
Is it worth repairing my iPad Air 1st gen?
In most cases yes. The iPad Air 1st gen (2013) uses the Apple A7 — still capable for everyday tasks. Battery replacement at R850 and screen repairs cost a fraction of a new device. For complex logic board faults we give an honest free diagnostic assessment before recommending any repair — we only suggest repair when it genuinely makes financial sense.
Do you offer collection and delivery for iPad repairs?
Yes — door-to-door collection and return across Gauteng for R300 via Eliz Courier, fully insured. Outside Gauteng we use The Courier Guy for insured nationwide shipping. WhatsApp 078 742 4769 to arrange.
